Dog seems tense but wags tail
09/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Stunning Jasper is named for a gem said to be ‘a stone of protection’ and ‘able to absorb negative energy’, and with his loyal nature and friendly, outgoing personality, it couldn’t be a better fit. Gorgeous with a capital G, Jasper looks like royalty but acts like a mischievous street urchin. Though he’s not ready to sit still at the ‘big kids table’ just yet, he’s more than ready to stand on it! A walk together is guaranteed to make you laugh and make you strong as he pulls like a bull in harness, wags his tail over the smallest joys and frequently checks in with a smile, all while following his super snuffler nose wherever it leads. But no matter how busy his sniffing schedule, Jasper still makes time to indulge in his other favorite hobbies of jumping on everyone he meets for hugs, and barking at any dog who so much as looks at him sideways. He’s definitely going to need training from his new parents, but what he lacks in social graces, he makes up for with a whole lotta heart. In a committed, adult-only family, Jasper could be a star. His luminous eyes will always have a playful spark burning bright in their coppery depths, so an active home is needed to keep him happy, healthy and focused on being the best boy he can be. If you’re looking for a full body workout, you’ve come to the right place! Someone who appreciates lovable yet labor-intensive pups would be ideal for Mr. Jasper, and he can’t wait to meet, sniff and hug his perfect person ASAP. If you fit the bill, then please don’t delay, step up for Jasper today!
08/31/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/29/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/30/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor consistently, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog jumps up high and hard on the Assessor with mouth open. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Jasper displayed a high level of over arousal on his assessment, jumping up consistently on the assessor. During tag, he became increasingly over aroused and jumped up high and hard with an open mouth. He was constantly in motion and difficult to position. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 8/31: Jasper’s body appears softer, with a wagging tail, though he maintains hard eye contact with the female greeter. His ears are erect and he quickly freezes, and reacts through the fence by lunging, barking, and growling. Jasper is muzzled before off leash introduction is conducted. When introduced off leash, Jasper remains tense, rushes forward, and continuously follows, attempts to jump on the greeter dog’s back while growling and snapping. At this time, we advise against placing Jasper into a home with other dogs. Due to observed amounts of reactivity and arousal around other dogs, it is advised that Jasper be muzzled in areas where there may be high amounts of dog traffic. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Jasper was very tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:8/20/17 During his initial medical exam, Jasper was active and tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Jasper so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only X_No children (under 13): Due to Jasper’s low threshold for arousal, we recommend an adult only home. _XSingle-pet home: See PLAYGROUP X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Jasper’s behavior with dogs, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner. See PLAYGROUP Potential challenges: X_Social hyper-arousal: Jasper displays a low threshold for arousal, jumping up on people constantly and becoming highly aroused during tag, displaying a potential to tip over into aggression. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Jasper to new and unfamiliar situations. X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Jasper has been observed to react to other dogs and human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Jasper may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
