08/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Handsome and tall best describe Jamie standing with a big smile right at the entrance of his den….He is well built, well dressed and quite engaging. As I plaster my hand flat on his door, he licks it with very gentle eyes… I dragged my feet writing few words about him. I met Jamie when he just arrived. He was stressed and cooped up in his arrival kennel. He pulled on the leash, played with it, was a little mouthy and it kind of blurred the good dog that was beneath these behaviors. We went yesterday for a walk around the block. He was perfect on the leash and even sat at the light. He did his business with some marking, did not chase the birds and met with interest some other pooches. I was quite impressed by the difference a few days can make. We sat on the sidewalk. Jamie was glad to rest and accepted caresses and hugs. He so reminds me of another dog I met few years ago who also at first was so stressed, even misbehaved and ended up to be the best forever best friend .. So, it is really important to give dogs(as well as people) a second chance. Jamie is waiting patiently at the Manhattan Care Center for his life to really happen….with you.
08/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jamie came into our center after a member of the public found him tied to a tree. During intake, he was energetic and friendly, allowed all handling. Jamie pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He was excitable upon entering SAFER assessment room, panting and displaying high energy and movement. Jamie allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, lip lick, tail wag. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick. Jamie followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, jumped up on assessor at end of game, then grabbed leash and required a reset in order to relinquish. He moved his body away during paw Squeeze, so remaining item was done using Flank. Jamie was intent on mounting assessor during Flank Squeeze positioning, requiring a reset. Once properly positioned, Jamie leaned into assessor and accepted the touch. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing it but more focused on the assess-a-hand handle. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Jamie solicits play from the female greeter dog with the ultimate goal to mount (currently unaltered). The behavior team feels that Jamie could potentially be adopted into a home with another dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction and slow introductions. He arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his/her behavior will translate into a home setting. The Behavior Team feels Jamie would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Any older children should have an in depth interaction before considering adoption. Jamie is a high energy dog who will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play. He may benefit from obedience training to learn leash manners as well as not to jump up, mouth, or mount. Look: 2. eyes averted, lip lick, wag Sensitivity: 2. accepts touch, body neutral, lip lick Tag: 2. jumps up on assessor at end, grabs and mouths leash, requires reset to relinquish Squeeze 1: 3. moves his legs/body away Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Attempts to mount assessor, difficult to position, displays high energy and movement, leans in Toy: 1. Minimal interest Dog-dog: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Jamie solicits play from the female greeter dog with the ultimate goal to mount (currently unaltered).
