Basic Information:: Jake is a tan, small mixed breed male who was not neutered prior to coming into the shelter. He was an owner surrender due to unpredictable, aggressive behaviors. He was found as a stray and had been in his owners home for three months. He has no known health issues or injuries, and last saw a vet when he got his vaccinations on 10/27/2017.

How is this dog around strangers?: Jake is described as being outgoing with strangers. He will bark at first and then when he sniffs them, he will wag his tail and seek attention from them.

How is this dog around children?: Jake has not spent time around children before.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Jake has interacted with other dogs and is playful and respectful around them. He enjoys playing with them and has always had positive interactions.

How is this dog around cats?: Jake has lived with a cat and was relaxed and very tolerant. The two would often play together and when the cat would swat at Jake, he would immediately retreat and sense the situation.

Resource guarding:: Jake’s owner did not report any resource guarding behavior.

Bite history:: Jake has bitten his owner before but has never bitten another animal.

For a New Family to Know: Jake is described as being friendly, affectionate and playful. His owner had bathed him when she first got him without any problems, but recently he will growl and bare his teeth at her if she tries to give him a bath. He will allow her to brush him, and she has not tried to trim his nails. He listens when he is directed to get off the furniture but he will growl if she tries to push him off. He likes to follow his owner around when she is home and also likes to follow her cat around. He likes to play with balls, stuffed toys and squeaky toys. He has been an indoor dog, eats both wet and dry food, and likes milk bones as treats. He is house trained to go outside on any surface, and knows the commands come and down. He likes to walk, jog and run for exercise but always on leash.

Bite history:: Yes, The owner stated she was playing with Jake and after a while she sat on the couch. She removed the items from her lap and went to nudge him on. He was growling and bared his teeth. He then turned and bit her finger, and her left knee. afterwards Jake ran and hid under a chair.

Energy level/descriptors:: Jake is described as friendly ,affectionate, and playful. He’s reported to have a high energy.

Other Notes:: Jake has been known to growl when being pushed off of the furniture.

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.

Tag:: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, or repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff.

Summary:: Jake was nervous during the handling assessment. At one point solicits attention from the assessor(Rubs shoulder), but than avoids eye contact and turns away.

ENERGY LEVEL:: His previous owner describes Jake as an energetic, friendly dog. Jake displayed medium energy and movement throughout assessment. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Jake appears to become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. New hope only: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Jake be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Jake to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Jake to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Jake presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges comments:: Dog has growled and snapped with some handling, showing an discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Jake’s paws at this time and being cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Jake to be more comfortable with handling. Bite history: Due to Jake’s bite history, we recommend a home without children. He has shown restraint in the care center and has not demonstrated any warnings of aggression, but when highly aroused Jake has shown a willingness to bite.
