03/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s pretty clear from looking at Jackie that she has not led the life of a pampered pet. She is mangy, her ears are infected and she’s likely been a mom many times over. She’s a tiny little girl, shy and sweet, quietly lying in her kennel when I came to leash her. She looked up at me as if to say, ‘really, are you coming for me, are we going out?’, and stood up slowly. She let me put a coat on her slim body as it was snowing a heavy wet snow and out we go. Her sweetness shines through loud and clear and two different people on the street stopped wanting to meet her and she greeted them shyly, enjoying an under the chin scratch from one. Off leash in the yard Jackie sniffed at a toy but didn’t play (has she ever had toys in her life?) and alertly watched as other dogs came into the yard. Jackie was found running loose in a park and the person who found her said she’s gentle and sweet….I completely agree! It’s Jackie’s turn to know what life is like as a friend and a pampered companion and once her skin is in tip top shape she’ll be a stunning little girl. It’s said that dogs always know who their heroes are and it’s true. Will you be Jacqueline’s hero?
Another Volunteer Writes: Are you someone whose friends beg to get help for your rescue fantasies, who remind you that you can’t change the lives of other beings? Hold off on that help just one more second, please, at least until you come rescue this amazing girl! Gentle, kind, loving beyond the definition of love, Jacqueline is in need of some rescuing. She appears to have had pups recently. She is missing the fur on her ears. She is too skinny. Yet she hugs, and kisses, and our hearts broke a little when she tried to figure out what she was supposed to do with a thrown ball—she couldn’t quite understand what was going on, but she knew fun was involved, and she sure was determined to try, bouncing and wagging her tail and looking up for clues. Jacqueline may not have known a lot of love before, but she miraculously embodies it. This is a dog ready for any family, any home, ready for rescue. Indulge your fantasies and come get this girl!
03/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jacqueline walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Jacqueline was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Jacqueline became a bit uncomfortable during second paw handling. She was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Jacqueline is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Jacqueline is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Jacqueline is nervous in the yard, and attempts to run away and flee from any approach from the helper.
03/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Jacqueline is uncomfortable around other dogs and will spend her time with them running away and avoiding interaction. She arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends allowing Jacqueline time to acclimate to her surroundings before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Jacqueline is nervous in the yard, and attempts to run away and flee from any approach from the helper. 3/8 update: Jacqueline continues to run away from greeting. She offers a correction when the other dog repeatedly attempts to sniff her.
