01/24/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/24/17 11:01 Basic Information Jacob is an approximate 3 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier. Police were called to retrieve a dog that was left behind tied up to a bathroom park door. Police stated Jacob growled and bark at them when they approached him. They needed to call ESU to safely tie up the dog and place him in a carrier. Police never handled this pet. Behavior during Intake Jacob tolerated all handling. At first he had his tail between his legs and would lower his head when I pet him. He quickly opened up and I was able to take off a sweater he had on by lifting both his front legs without any issues. He licked my hand and had a happy tail. No signs of aggression were displayed.
01/26/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I don’t like to play favorites. But sometimes, well the girl can’t help it. The moment I saw Jacob, I knew I was a goner. There’s soulful, there’s sweet, and then there’s 3 year-old Jacob, who makes both of those adjectives sound thin and shallow. One look into his hazel-green eyes is enough to warm the coldest of hands on a winter’s day and the the coldest of hearts in need of warming. He is the perfect weight at just under 60 lbs and a perfect gentleman on our walk. He trots out right in front of me, often looking to back just to check in, say “hello,” and make sure that I’m alright. In his company, of course I am. I’m more than alright. Once at the park, we two find a bench and Jacob gets to snuggling. He lays his soft, cappuccino paws across my lap, and in between bursts of wags and kisses, quietly watches the world go by. After some time we decide to head back, and on our way, cross paths with another of the park’s inhabitants. He with the bushy tail and the bucky-y teeth now standing directly in front of Jacob. The squirrel stops dead in his tracks and stares at looming Jacob, likely worried he’s taken a very wrong and dangerous turn. But Jacob pads right by, almost brushing him with his big paw, and gives a gentle nod, like a silent greeting between two friends. Jacob may be just 3 years-old, but I’d wager he knows the world more than most. This soulful gentleman — warm, gentle, sweet — and appreciative of all creatures big and small. He is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
02/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 1/24/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/25/17 Look: 1. Dog leans forward with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth, rolls on back. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Jacob displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment. He was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP SUMMARY: Jacob engages in soft play with female dogs in the care center. Jacob has displayed reactivity (stiffening, barking and snapping) toward select other dogs (mostly male) in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Jacob and other social dogs on a one-on-one basis, as Jacob may be selective when greeting male dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/24/17 During his initial medical exam Jacob was a bit tense. ENERGY LEVEL: 1/24/17 We have no history on Jacob so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Jacob is a young, enthusiastic, social dog. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him/her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
