03/13/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/13/17 15:10 Basic information: Jackie is a 13 years old neutered male standard poodle/Cocker spaniel mixed. He was gifted to his previous owner in the Dominican Republic and made his way to Manhattan. The previous owner could no longer care for him. His last veterinary visit was on May 2016. Socialization: Around strangers Jackie was friendly and outgoing. He tolerated strangers that would frequent the previous owner’s home. Jackie lived with a female poodle mix and a cat whom he played gently with. Jackie has no bite history. Behavior: Jackie barks too much when left alone. During storms he was not bothered. He tolerated his food being touched while he ate. He was not bothered when told to get off furniture. He tolerated baths, nail clippings, and hair brushing. He would be friendly when strangers or unfamiliar persons arrived at his home. For a New Family to Know: Jackie was described to us as a friendly and mellow dog. His activity level was low as he would roam the apartment in a slow pace. The previous owner favorite thing about Jackie was that he was a very affectionate dog. Jackie’s favorite activity was sleeping. He would follow the owner around and sleep in the same room. His favorite toy was balls. He was kept mostly indoors. His diet consisted of 1 can of Vienna sausages in the morning and 1 can of mighty dog wet food in the afternoon. He is very much house trained as he would only go potty in the wee-wee pad or outside on the grass. Jackie knew “come” and he would obey when told to ate/drink. He enjoyed slow walks on the leash. He pulled very lightly on the leash. Behavior during intake: Jackie tolerated all handling and allowed counselor to collar. He tolerated being picked up and had a relaxed body. Jackie roamed off leash and laid on the floor to rest. The counselors were able to snap photos and he enjoyed treats.

03/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 3/13/17 Neutered Male, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults, a female small dog and a cat Behavior toward strangers: Social Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Social Behavior toward cats: Social Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Jackie is described as social and mellow with a low activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/15/17 Summary: Due his current health status, as well as his behavior, Jackie is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. He is able to walk very little and snaps when he is touched. The behavior department believes Jackie would benefit best from placement with a New Hope Rescue who can meet his needs medically and then assess behavior once she is in a stable environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Jackie to new and unfamiliar situations. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 3/15: When introduced off leash to other dogs, Jackie allows brief approach, and begins to growl with lingering approach. He keeps only to himself. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/13/17 During his initial medical exam, Jackie snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: Previous owner reported that Jackie has a low level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Jackie is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Jackie has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (While at the care center, Jackie has shown that he will snap when he is touched. It is important to always go slow and give Jackie the option to walk away from any social interaction. Jackie should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Jackie’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Jackie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.)
