03/12/17 22:08 Jack is a 6 year old Male, American pit-bull and Mastiff mix, he came to the previous owner’s home from a friend and has been with the owner since he was a puppy. He was surrendered due to the owner’s eviction. He has Multiple injures on his face and legs due to him previously fighting with the owner dog in the home and He has no vet history. Socialization: When a stranger approaches Jack he is shy for the first few minutes and is tense when a individual approaches him. Jack has only lived with adult and is very playful and exuberant. He has never lived in home with children but has lived with one other 6 year old male dog his brother who is also a Pitbull and Mastiff mix. Around the other dog he is usually tolerant they do not play with each other and mostly keep to themselves. He is bitten he the other dog in the home today and left multiple wounds on his the other dogs neck and face, including a large wound under his chin. Behavior: During Storms or fireworks, Jack is nervous and hides. He is very anxious when he is left alone. If an individual tries to touch Jack’s food bowl, take a treat or toy away he barks and growls. . During bathing or being held jack isn’t bothered. When an unfamiliar person or family member comes to the house or approaches the owner he will bark at and growl for a few minutes. For a new family: Jack was described as playful, affectionate, and confident by his previous family. He has a medium activity level and enjoys snuggles from his owner and playing in the park with tennis balls and rope toys. He is feed dry food of the Purina brand with peanut butter for a treat once a day. Jack is mostly house trained and will have accidents few times a month and uses the grass, cement and wee-wee pad. When left alone he will bark and goes to potty indoors he was crate trained when he was a puppy and no longer uses the crate. He knows commands like sit, down and stay, he pulls lightly on leash and when off leash he will wander but returns when being called.

CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for JACK A1106066 KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 3/12/17 Unaltered male, owner surrender (in previous home since puppyhood) Previously lived with: One adult, another dog (littermate) Behavior toward strangers: Shy and tense when initially approached, may bark and growl Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: With his littermate/housemate, Jack was tolerant but not playful. The two dogs fought while in the car together, being driven to the care center. Both dogs received significant wounds. Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Growls and barks when food or toys are taken away Bite history: Yes, bit and was bitten by his housemate dog while they were in the back of a van together. This is the first and only time the two dogs fought. Housetrained: Mostly, may have accidents a few times a month Energy level/descriptors: Jack is described as playful, affectionate, and confident, with ah medium activity level SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/26/17 Pending further healing of wounds Summary: Due to the wounds on Jack’s face and neck, he is not an ideal candidate for a handling assessment involving collar restraint. He has tolerated collaring and muzzling for playgroup. PLAYGROUP: Jack is muzzled prior to entering the pen due to his history. Jack displays a stiff body at the gate. He is allowed to interact with the novel female off leash and is mostly occupied with the muzzle, but briefly stops to sniff her. He increase his distances from her, and the session is ended. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/13/17: During his initial medical examination, Jack was calm and trembling, and he allowed all handling. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Jack has been social with his caretakers, but has shown come concerns with leash biting and arousal level. He has been difficult to return to the kennel, grabbing the leash and pulling, and sometimes turning and attempting to push the door open again. During socialization time with the enrichment team, Jack has sought attention, maintained close proximity, and allowed petting on the head and body. He has become fixated on other dogs outside through the pens, tensing and biting at the fence. When he does this on leash walks he has been easy to distract.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter _X_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Jack’s history and discomfort around other dogs, we recommend not using dog parks to prevent another bite incident. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Jack is reported to growl over food and toy resources. It is important to leave Jack alone while he is eating and never to take anything directly from his mouth. Due to Jack’s recent bite history and the degree of uncomfortable behavior he displays towards the novel females at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Jack be the only resident dog at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Jack associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. 3/22: Jack is muzzled prior to entering the pen due to his DOH status. Jack displays a stiff body at the gate. He is allowed to interact with the novel female off leash and is mostly occupied with the muzzle, but briefly stops to sniff her. He increase his distances from her, and the session is ended. 3/26: Jack is muzzle as a precaution before entering the pen. He displays a softer body, when the novel female is sniffing him. He is uncomfortable and attempts to increase distance, while being occupied by the muzzle. He will begin to participate in counter-conditioning sessions to help him become comfortable around other dogs.

03/13/17 History – Fought with housemate last night. Microchip pos #4C02231C50. Subjective Observed Behavior – Calm, trembling a bit, allows all handling. Evidence of Cruelty seen – No. Evidence of Trauma seen – Yes. Objective ORAL: Not assessed due to injuries to head and face, will examine when sedated for wound treatment. EENT: No oculonasal discharge. Dried blood on both pinnae. PLN: No enlargements noted. H/L: HR=90, RR=12. Lungs clear, no murmurs/arrhythmias. ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated. U/G: Intact male. MSI: Amb x 4, no lameness. BCS=5/9. Multiple bite wounds and dried blood over face, ears, neck. Mod. swelling right lower lip. CNS: No neurologic abnormalities noted. A: Multiple bite wounds, soft tissue trauma. P: Sedate for wound exploration, cleaning/treatment. Start NSAIDs: Rimadyl 50 mg/ml 1.5 ml SQ administered. Procaine Penicillin G 3 ml SQ administered.
