12/20/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I’m the self proclaimed President of Jack’s fan club, but am willing to relinquish my title (without a vote recount) to his new mom or dad. Current club members include staff and volunteers who have spent time with and been hugged by this adorable redhead, but once you are President you’ll have your own cabinet (I mean club). So happy to make a friend with a leash and the promise of an outing, Jack’s first stop was giving one of his staff fans a huge hug and a wiggle before we head out the door. He’s good on leash, goes potty right away and after a short walk we head into a pen for play time. Got toys? Jack LOVES toys and ran from one to another to pick them up, shake them all about, get the zoomies with one in his mouth, play a quick game of keep away and then tug with me, runs over to greet a dog through the gate, and it’s back to the toys. You won’t need to go out to a movie, or get Netflix, as Jack is a show all by himself. (He did demonstrate some toy guarding in his behavior assessment so care will need to be taken when playing.) I could have watched him play all day. Once a bit tuckered out he rests froggy style, chomping on the toy but not tearing it apart. Renewed, he’s off to play some more. Another break for a human snuggle and kiss, and off to the toys again. Jack’s other fun time is in playgroup with both males and females, enjoying running chase play and offering correction if mounted. Jack also wanted me to be sure to tell you that he gets so excited when he sees someone outside his kennel that he starts barking. Once leashed and out he’s a gem, a jaunty perfect walker on leash. So, don’t be concerned if you see him bark in his kennel. He’s an awesome dog and I would keep my title of President of the Jack Fan Club if I could, but I can’t. He’s absolutely awesome and looking for a fun person or family to provide lots of love and a toy box full. I guarantee that you’ll never stop smiling.
11/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown Unaltered, Owner Surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/30/2016 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, wiggly Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, sniffs hand Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, settles easily at end Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog accepts touch, sniffs assessor’s hand Toy 1: 4. Dog freezes Summary: Jack was sociable throughout all handling during his assessment though showed some signs of potential possessive behavior. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back off, which can quickly lead to a scuffle. PLAYGROUP: Jack is playful and often engages in a running chase style of play with male and female dogs. Jack has begun to display concerning levels of overarousal in a playful setting, and requires handler assistance in order to manage this behavior during shelter playgroups. It can not be said for certain if this behavior will translate into a home setting. The behavior department feels that a potential adopter should take these aforementioned concerns into consideration before introducing Jack to dogs outside of the care center. Any introductions to other dogs should be done slowly, with dogs who are social, as well as polite and tolerant during interaction or play. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/24/16 During his initial medical examination, Jack allowed all handling though appeared to become tense at times. No issues noted. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5)(See potential challenges) Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (We cannot be certain whether any guarding or possessive behavior may appear in a home environment, but we recommend adopters comfortable with safe management and modification of guarding behavior in case it does.)
12/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Jack is playful and often engages in a running chase style of play with male and female dogs. 12/8: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Jack engages in running chase play once solicited by the helper dog. 12/9: Jack engages in exuberant running play with male and female dogs. He will solicit chase and offer correction when mounted. 12/10: Jack became slightly aroused by the barking and playing in the adjoining pen. He frantically barks, jumps up, and pushes toward the dog in his pen. 12/13: Jack is highly aroused upon entering the pen and becomes vocal while chasing the other dog. 12/14-12/15: Jack engages in runnign chase play with other dogs. He quickly becomes overaroused during and begins to frantically mouth and run after other dogs, despite them attempting to avoid this behavior from him. He is removed from the play space. 12/17: Jack becomes aroused while waiting to enter the play yard. He begins to vocalize and when greeting an unaltered male he begins to bark and growl; he is not able to be distracted. 12/19: Jack continues to display high level of arousals during chase play. 12/20-24: Jack engages in running play with another dog. 12/25-31: Jack solicits running play from a female, but will do “zoomies” through the pen alone if she does not engage.
