A volunteer writes:

Jack is a beautiful sight in his kennel. A golden boy, a Labrador Retriever mix  with the softest coat. He is a bit on the thin side, some might say that he is trim but I think that the needs  a little more meat around the bones…His chestnut eyes, framed by furry honey hues  are bright. Strangely, his tail is docked and we do not know why…Jack was quite uncomfortable upon arrival to the care center. He was a family dog since the tender age of 6 month. It took him a few days of being walked by staff and volunteers to feel more at ease and start to play, play, play. He is ready when you are. After a walk around the block when he relieves himself without marking, Jack gets to do what he really likes. Playing a good ball game. He is all excited but with measure. His little tail wags non stop. His eyes sparkle. He will sit, waiting for the throw and leaps graciously after the ball that he brings back to me or sometimes goes savor on the bench. Jack does not guard his toy as he was clearly taught to play properly by his former master.Spending more time with Jack helped me discover his soft sides. He sits on the bench next to me and licks my face clean, well his idea of clean, of course. He is a very  very sweet dog. Although too thin for my taste, Jack takes tasty treats very delicately from my hand. He seems to like other dogs and even play bows to a male and a female through the gate. He was a bit shy in his first playgroup with his peers but I bet that by now,  being a little more daring, he will enjoy his time more with them. Jack was relinquished to us as he was destructive in the house, according to his former master, chewing on household items and even on the walls when he was  left alone. He would be other wise very affectionate,  welcoming to strangers, love baths, a great walker and swimmer, house trained, nice to a visiting Chihuahua and let  “his kids” ride on his back. Jack is a very likable young dog, really gorgeous, playful, sociable and friendly. The cause of his  behavior has to be looked in to see where it stems from in order to work on the issue. I hope that a wonderful adopter will come along, see Jack’s many “plusses”  and help him overcome  his problem. He will be then for sure, a top dog everyone would love to own and cherish.. Jack is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping to start a new life with you.

PROFILE:

Jack has been cared for by his owner since he was 6 months old. He is described as playful, energetic, quiet and affectionate. He has lived with children aged 6 months to 5 years old. He allows the children to pet him, touch his face and ears and even climb on his back. Jack becomes excited when he notices other dogs where he will bark and wag his tail. Jack is playful with the Chihuahua that visits the home. He will lick at the other dog constantly while jumping around him in attempts to get him to play.

BEHAVIOR
Jack likes to be in the same room as his owner, normally resting by the door. When he wants attention, he will paw at his owner’s legs or jump up on them. Jack enjoys petting and giving attention. He isn’t bothered when he is approached or having his food touched while eating. He is bathed 1x every three weeks and will jump into the tub when he is told that it’s time for his bath.  Since Jack was brought home he has had a tendency to chew on furniture in the home. He would chew on the kitchen table legs and random items lying around. His owner makes sure to keep an eye on him to prevent him from chewing on items. He received specialized dog training but it didn’t help. Jack is always restricted to his own room when left alone. His owner stated that he won’t bark but he will attempt to chew at the walls so the walls of his room are fitted with chicken wire to prevent him. When guest enter the home he will greet them with a wagging tail.

FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW
Jack enjoys playing with balls and playing fetch. He understands the command “sit.” Jack is house trained and accustomed to being walked at least 2x a day for about 45 minutes a day. He loves playing in water and is accustomed to going to Bear Mountain to play. He is fed Purina dry dog food. His owner stated that he won’t eat wet food that is offered to him. He sleeps in his own room but will tear up dog beds that are given to him.
