03/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Isaiah fka Izzy is a timid young boy, at least, now, as it is the beginning of his stay at the care center. Few walks yesterday opened up his shell a tiny bit and by the end of the day, he hopped on the bench for caresses and even attempted a kiss… Isaiah fka Izzy has still a way to go but he certainly is going in the right direction. He is one gorgeous youngster, part Lab or Hound, all snow white but for a chocolate ear… He poses nicely, sitting as straight as an i for the pictures. I know he is not yet himself. He has an eye for the ball. He knows what it is. His eyes light up and he runs many times after it , catching it only once… Isaiah fka Izzy needs to be more comfortable and I bet that it will happen with many walks, encounters with staff and volunteers and mostly playgroups with his peers. He is right now hand shy, not eager to take my treats but interested, so I know that it is just a matter of time for him to melt with dry liver treats….He does come when called and even can sit on command, accepts caresses and settles by my side. He is really beautiful, the perfect weight and so healthy looking in his well groomed suit. He pulls a little on the leash and does his business in one stop. Isaiah fka Izzy , the male fashion model is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for his time to shine. Come and meet him soon, get to know him and may be , a wonderful match will happen….
03/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Isaiah came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He allowed petting upon intake but appeared nervous when initially approached. He was timid and slow to warm up during his initial medical exam but allowed all handling. Isaiah pulled slightly on leash for his relief walk. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body a bit tense, lip lick. Isaiah stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity, a bit tense, tail down, mouth closed. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted, soft. Upon positioning for Squeeze, assessor moved a bit quickly and Isaiah flinched, body low. He warmed up after some gentle talking. He showed no interest in Toy. Isaiah did not pull back on both Squeeze attempts. When off leash with other dogs, Isaiah is uncomfortable when approached but will solicit play when the helper dog turns away. He is most comfortable when he is able to dictate the intensity of play as well as when it starts and stops. The Behavior Team feels Isaiah would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction and initially entering a home with a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can relax and know what to expect. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit tense, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog follows, but is a bit distracted, approaches the Assessor at the end of the game Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: Isaiah is uncomfortable when approached but will solicit play when the helper dog turns away. He is most comfortable when he is able to dictate the intensity of play as well as when it starts and stops.
03/24/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Isaiah has been fearful during off-leash interaction, but at times will engage in bouncy play. He is most comfortable when he is able to dictate the intensity of play as well as when it starts and stops. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Isaiah to ensure compatability with a resident dog. He may do best with a dog that has a softer style of play and interaction. Slow, positive introductions with a resident dog in the home are encouraged to ensure that both dogs remain comfortable during interaction. He arrived into our care as a stray so in home behaviors with dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs Isaiah is fearful. He stays low to the ground and runs away from interaction. 3/25 update: Isaiah is initially fearful and hides under the bench. When he is given space by the helper dog (female) he begins to solicit by bouncing along side of her. After some time interacting he begins to attempt to mount. 3/26 update: Izzy is uncomfortable when approached but will solicit play when the helper dog turns away. He is most comfortable when he is able to dictate the intensity of play as well as when it starts and stops. 3/29 update: Isaiah, again, is fearful when he first enters the pen and needs time to gain confidence and approach the other dogs to sniff and solicit. 3/30 update: Isaiah offers polite greeting to the other dog, then wanders the yard while keeping to himself. 3/31 update: Isaiah remains fearful in the yard. He keeps to himself and hops up on a bench while avoiding interaction. 4/1 update: Isaiah hides under the bench when being sniffed, but will pop his head out and follow around the other dogs while they play if they do not pay attention to him. 4/2 update: Isaiah engages in soft play with males and females. He is more comfortable/confident, not hiding under the bench and readily approaching dogs face-to-face.
