08/20/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/20/16 17:04 Indy is a eight month old German Shepherd/ Boxer mix. He was surrendered by his owner due to owner moving out of stated and not having the space to keep Indy. He was given to owner by a friend and was with his owner for three months. Indy has lived with four adults and three children. He has spent time with children ages three and up. He is described as relaxed around the children and will engage in exuberant play, he can sometimes get rough during play. He likes to jump and can knock the children over. When he sees another dog Indy’s body will tense he will hard bark and try to get off leash towards the other dog. He has not been around cats. Indy is anxious when left alone and will destroy shoes and any household items left around. He is waked twice a day and will pull very hard on leash. When Indy’s food is touched while eating he will tense growl and then eat faster. He does not mind when he is restrained or pushed off the furniture. He was not groomed or bathed by previous owner. He has been kept only indoors and likes to play with balls and rope. He knows the command sit and lay down. He eats dry food Iams brand and is fed twice a day. Upon intake Indy was energetic and greeted cousnelor with a loose wiggly body. When he saw a dog in the lobby, he began to hard bark and was lunging at the other dog. Indy relaxed once away from the other dog. Cousnelor was able to collar, scan and photograph.
08/31/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The name Indy conjures up racetracks, fast cars, and tons of speed. While our Indy may be in NYC, he is definitely a fast paced, high velocity type of guy! Indy was surrendered because his owner is moving and can no longer keep him. In his previous home, he spent time with children ages 3 and up and did well with them, though at times he could play a bit roughly. At only 8 months, Indy is rather large, with legs that seem to extend forever, curious golden brown eyes, adorable white knee socks, a boxer face and the tail of a shepherd. He is energetic, hyper even, and always ready for a good game of fetch or tug. He seems housetrained, and while he can be a little rambunctious, he’s manageable on the leash. He has had some basic training, but at such a young age, he will benefit from more obedience, socialization amongst his puppy peers, and structure within the home. You don’t have to travel to the Midwest to see the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” ask to meet Indy today!
08/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Indy is an eight month old German shepherd/Boxer mix being surrendered to our care centers due to his owner moving out of state and unable to care for him where he is going. Indy has lived with four adults and three children, aged three and up. He has been described as relaxed around the children though can sometimes become rough in play, jumping up and knocking them over. The owner reports that in catching sight of other dogs, Indy’s body will become tense and he will hard bark and try to break off leash; there has been no exposure to cats. Indy is described as anxious when left alone and will destroy shoes and any household items left around. According to the owner, when his food bowl is touched while eating, Indy will become tense, growl and eat faster. During intake, Indy was energetic and greeted the counselor with a loose and wiggly body. He allowed all handling to be conducted. Upon entering the assessment room, Indy displays exuberant energy, appearing fairly anxious, vocalizing (whining); jumping, mouthy (light). Indy allowed all handling to be conducted though becoming easily excitable and mouthy at times. Because of anxious and exuberant energy displayed during the assessment in conjunction with his owner profile notes, the behavior department believes Indy would benefit best from an experienced adopter who can provide an adult only home as well as the mental and physical stimulation he needs to thrive. A proper period of decompression is advised to help Indy acclimate in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Indy to new and unfamiliar situations. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft. Tag: 1. Dog stands with his tail low and wagging, and comes toward the Assessor in a friendly manner when the Assessor ceases moving. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
08/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Indy’s previous owner reported that when he sees another dog his body will tense, he will bark and try to get off leash towards the other dog. When off leash at the Care Center, Indy is initially nervous but is able to engage in running, chase play. He is still nervous as he engages, displaying a tucked tail and rear. With further playgroup sessions, Indy has continued to solicit high energy play while also continually displaying nervous body language with female dogs. As the sessions continue, Indy becomes more relaxed and engages in gentle play with female dogs but growls at a male dog that attempts to play with him. The Behavior Department recommends that Indy be placed in a home with a female dog that is tolerant of his puppy, novice play style. Any potential adopters should continue Indy’s socialization around other dogs. 8/21: Indy enters the pen with a nervous, tucked posture. He does greet the other dog and then wanders the pen some. Eventually he relaxes some and engages in running chase play but remains somewhat nervous- running with a tucked tail and rear. 8/22: Indy enters the pen full of energy. Initially he is pushy and in the other dog’s face when soliciting attention and play. Eventually he softens his approach and engages in running chase play. 8/23: Indy enters the pen calmly and greets the other dogs with a play bow. He engages in high energy play, initially still a bit nervous, running with a tucked tail. As the session continues, Indy becomes more relaxed as he continues to engage and solicit play. 8/24: Indy attempts to solicit play when he enters the pen. After the other dog ignores his solicitations he wanders the pen then becomes anxious, barking loudly. 8/25: Indy is able to engage in play with female dogs. When being introduced to a male dog, Indy briefly greets him before growling and placing his chin on the other male dog’s back. 8/27- 8/29: Indy engages in polite, gentle play with a group of female dogs.
