09/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We all love oldies…. Maybe because they remind us of our own gmas and gpas and all the wonderful memories attached to them…Ikora fits the bill… She is nine years old, has a grey muzzle, is as sweet as pie and the delicious chocolate mousse my own gma used to make for me. She is a little anxious in her kennel but so enjoys the company of every single one of her caretakers. She is a bench gal squeezing tightly against me, giving kisses and receiving hugs. She is so pretty in her foxy dress and her eyes are sparkling with naughtiness. She truly is a “girlfriend” with whom to share our little secrets, our joys and sorrows…. Ikora walks well on the leash, does stairs nicely, eliminates during our stroll and sits on command. She is quite polite taking treats from my hand. In playgroups with her peers (as well as in the street), Ikora behaves like a proper lady. Everybody is glad to spend time with Ikora. She is pretty, has a brain, is sweet, sociable, easy going and affectionate. What would we want more? Well, giving Ikora the opportunity to spend her golden years spoiled and loved as she deserves. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/21/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/24/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Ikora appeared a bit anxious in the assessment room, whining. She allowed all handling and was social with the assessor. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Ikora has remained polite in all of her interactions with dogs off leash, greeting male and female dogs with soft body language. We cannot be sure of her behavior towards another dog in the home as she arrived as a stray, so interactions should be conducted at a slow pace. PLAYGROUP: 9/22: When introduced off leash to male dogs, Ikora greets politely and wander the pen. 9/23: Ikora continues to be polite when greeting another dog. She will then wander the pen or seek handler attention. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Ikora barked and howled at the door. She was aloof with the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/21/17 During her initial medical exam, Ikora was distracted but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Ikora so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 9/27/17: Ikora’s sociabililty has increased and anxiety has decreased as Ikora has acclimated to the environment and to her new caretakers. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Ikora has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining and howling) at intake and through her assessment. We cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. If it does present, we recommend giving Ikora things to do to relieve her anxiety, such as Kongs and puzzle toys, and taking her for walks. She should be given time to acclimate to her new environment and only positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used with her.
