07/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hunter does not belong to a kennel! He is an energetic and strong dog who requires an active master and things to do… Hunter has been beautifully cared for. He is a masterpice and so elegant. Healthy, a great weight, delicately cropped ears and a perfectly groomed chocolate and white coat. He seems to be ready for a show… Sadly, gorgeous Hunter was relinquished into our care as his master moved to a place not allowing large dogs. We are told that he is very friendly with people and pooches alike, very playful, high energy and enthusiastic. He does not like to share his food or toys with his peers..Just like a two year old child…Hunter lets us know that he is not fond of his den. He is leashed easily and pulls like ten horses on the street, marking very little his territory.. I am not the best match for him. He slows down upon request, though, even sits quite obediently, waiting for the next order. He cries a little. He licks my hand caressing his head.. I bet he misses his family…Hunter is a very attractive dog who stands out in the crowd….He has had some training but will need more and mostly a new owner or family able to channel his high energy level. Hunter is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for his new master and teacher. Another volunteer writes: OK, I admit it…I have a little (well, maybe not so little), crush on this smiling, tail wagging meatball! So ready to come out for a walk, he peed a river as soon as we were out the door, confirming his housetraining skills. He wags his tail at everyone as we walk, again confirming information from his former owner that he loves to make new friends. After a short walk we played ball in the backyard, Hunter doing a great job of fetch and keep away!!! Before putting Hunter back in his kennel (he hopped right back in) we went for another short walk, Hunter carrying the ball in his mouth. Aha! Once he had the ball to carry his leash manners improved 100%.
06/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hunter came into our center as an owner surrender on 6/24/2016. It is reported he is friendly towards stranger and other dogs, appears to be fearful of cats. Owner reports when left alone in the home, Hunter may bark, whine, and become destructive of household items/get in the trash. Owner states Hunter will growl if another dog comes near his food while eating, or attempts to take a toy from him. No information was given as to whether Hunter displays these behaviors when a person tries to take Food or Toy. Owner reports Hunter is very housebroken, likes to go on the dirt. Hunter is described as very friendly, playful, a little pushy, and very active/loves to go to the dog park. During intake, Hunter jumped up to lick admission counselor’s face, allowed all handling. He pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Hunter displayed high energy and movement upon entering SAFER assessment room. He jumped up to lick assessor’s face during Look item. Hunter leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, open mouth pant. He was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, but settled easily at end. Hunter pulled his legs and body away during paw Squeeze attempt, so remaining item was conducted using Flank. Once positioned, he had no response to both Flank Squeezes. Hunter showed very minimal interest in Toy, sniffing once or twice before turning away. However, this may be due to environment as owner reports Hunter loves to chew on bones and find big tree branches in the park. When off leash with other dogs Hunter is sexually motivated. After a few attempts at mounting, all with correction offered, he finally ceases and begins whining at the door seeking exit. The Behavior Team feels Hunter would do best with an Experienced owner that does not have young children, previous owner reports he feels this would be the best match for Hunter. Hunter will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, and durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face Sensitivity: 1. leans into the Assessor, open mouth Tag: 2. not fearful, but is unresponsive Squeeze 1: 3. soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Hunter is sexually motivated-takes correction, then whines to exit
06/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Hunter has displayed interest in engaging in play and interacting with select dogs. Increasingly anxious behaviors have been observed during Hunter’s most recent times out into playgroup. Hunter comes from a former home where his previous owner cites that “He loves new dog friends”. However, due to the selectivity when greeting unfamiliar dogs, and increasingly anxious behavior in our care, the behavior department recommends allowing Hunter time to acclimate into a new environment and slow, positive introductions to dogs outside the care center. 6/25: When off leash with other dogs Hunter is sexually motivated. After a few attempts at mounting, all with correction offered, he finally ceases and begins whining at the door seeking exit. 6/28: Hunter is tolerant of being sniffed but does not reciprocate interest. He offers correction when jumped on by another dog in a playful manner. 6/29: Hunter displays sexually motivated behaviors around a particualr female and eventually solicits with intent to mount. 6/30: Hunter engages in play with intent to mount a particular female dog. 7/1 update: Hunter is sexually motivated with one female but responds well to correction. He engages in play with a polite female but is a bit pushy when she is not interested. 7/2 update: Hunter is anxious in the yard, standing at the door and whining/barking. He corrects the helper dog when she attempts to greet.

A volunteer writes:
Hunter’s person went into the hospital and Hunter came to us. He’s understandably confused and concerned without his person, his home and in a completely unfamiliar environment. So handsome in his gleaming mahogany and white coat he’s compact but too thin. Wagging his tail shyly he wants to make friends and we take our time getting to know one another. Initially not interested in my treats, as we became friends he started to gently take them from my hand. He’ll sit for them and patiently wait. Hunter knows his name and comes when called again shyly wagging his tail. A play group was going on in another pen and Hunter wagged his tail and it was clear he so wanted to join the group. Hunter needs some meat on his bones, but other than that he’s a handsome sweet boy who needs a person to take care of.
