A volunteer writes: The hunt is over. Prince Charming has been found. Where do I even begin with 1 year-old Hunter? His magnificent coat? It’s as if this already sugary sweet boy was coated in chocolate then wrapped in Rocky Road ice cream. His smile? From his ears to eyes to his nose to those jowls, Hunter seems to grin with his whole body and it’s infectious to say the least. His playful but never pushy ways? On one recent summer evening Hunter provided me with endless, enjoyable entertainment as he ran for his ball, hopped up on a bench, and, finally succumbing to the summer sun, collapsed in a heap to continue his play time but with legs sprawled adorably across the bench. And how about his love for snuggles? I can’t imagine anything better than spending a day in the park with the sun in my face, the grass between my toes, and my main squeeze Hunter at my side. Well at my side, or on my lap, or giving me a quick and loving hug, as Hunter effortlessly excels at all three. Hunter was recently surrendered to our care following his family’s change in circumstances. As a young and bouncy boy, he’s done well with other dogs in playgroup and would do best with a tolerant and social housemate who can show him the puppy ropes. Incredibly handsome, endlessly fun, and with personality for days? The hunt is over. Your forever starts here. Hunter is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Hunter A1100326 KNOWN HISTORY: 07/20/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/23/17 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog may lick hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog may lick hand. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Hunter was social throughout his assessment though appears to lack impulse control. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play, and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the pair signals it is over. PLAYGROUP: Hunter is exuberant with dogs in the care center. Hunter has been observed to become pushy when soliciting play. He may lack appropriate manners control when engaging, often mouthing and jumping on top of other dogs who are not comfortable with this play behavior. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Hunter and well-socialized dogs. We recommend only placing him into a home with another dog that is comfortable with exuberant play, but will also offer correction and help teach appropriate social skills. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 07/20/17 Upon intake, Hunter was playful and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/23/17 During his initial medical examination, Hunter was playful, active and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hunter so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.

Hunter is exuberant with dogs in the care center. Hunter has been observed to become pushy when soliciting play. He may lack appropriate manners control when engaging, often mouthing and jumping on top of other dogs who are not comfortable with this play behavior. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Hunter and well-socialized dogs. We recommend only placing him into a home with another dog that is comfortable with exuberant play, but will also offer correction and help teach appropriate social skills. 7/20: Hunter displays playful body language and a fast wagging tail when greeting the female greeter dog. When introduced off leash, Hunter is forward upon approach, rusing into the pen while playfully jumping on the greeter dog. When the female greeter dog offers correction, Hunter is persistent and then attempts to mount, while ignoring ongoing correction or handler interruptions. 7/22: Hunter is introduced off leash to a female puppy. He rushes is and playfully jumps on her and continuse to rush forward and sniff. He is interrupted repeatedly and begins to sniff the pen briefly, before exuberantly returning to jumping and exuberant attempts at play.
