09/09/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/09/17 11:19 During intake Hufflepuff and the other dog she was in the crate with were barking from inside the crate and were not handled by the counselor. Hufflepuff’s body would tense up when someone would approach the carrier and she would stare and bark. However, the counselor interacted with her after she was taken out of the crate and she was able to pet her and she had a loose wiggly body but seemed a little nervous of her surroundings. She got along with the other dog in the crate, when both were barking from inside the crate, they would not redirect to one another. The officers stated that officers from the overnight shift did walk them, however, they were difficult to get back into the crate and were in the crate, together, for a while before coming to the shelter.

A volunteer writes: When you’re sorted into the Hufflepuff House of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, you value hard work, patience, loyalty and fair play. Well, not only is Hufflepuff named appropriately, she founded the school in Harry Potter land! Sweet, shy, pleasantly plump, Miss Hufflepuff is using her magic to figure out this new world. She can be a bit nervous on the street with sudden noises and movements, is likely housetrained, has decent leash manners which I suspect will improve with her comfort level, and thoroughly enjoyed our walk with a wagging tail. Off leash, Huffy (nickname approved by Harry Potter) plays briefly with a toy, joins me on the bench for some petting, and follows me around the pen as we explore the perimeter. When I picked up my leash from the peg, Huffy wagged her tail excitedly, as to her that meant she was going out! Sadly, at this point, it really meant she was going in, but with her innate charm, patience, loyalty and sense of fair play as taught in her school, I know her forever home is just around the next corner. No witchcraft here, just a sincere new BFF. Meet her today!
09/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile Date of intake 9/9/2017 Unaltered female, stray Behavior toward dogs: Respectful of the other dog. Other notes: Hufflepuff was found as a stray with another similarly sized dog. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 9/11/2017 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, lip lick. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, body a bit tense, mouth closed, displacement yawning, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, playful toward end of game Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw, lip lick Toy 1. Very minimal interest. Dog briefly sniffs, then walks away. Summary: Hufflepuff appeared cautious and alert during her assessment, though tolerated handling without issue. PLAYGROUP: Hufflepuff has appeared highly tense and uncomfortable in the presence of dogs while in our care. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. At this time, the behavior department feels that Hufflepuff would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a future home. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake 9/9/2017 Hufflepuff was brought in as a stray in a crate with another dog, together in the same crate. She would bark and become tense when people walked by. Once out of the overcrowded crate, Hufflepuff was social and loose and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 9/9/2017 During her initial medical exam, Hufflepuff was relaxed. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hufflepuff so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays as having a medium level of energy. She will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behavior outlined below) _X_Single dog home/no dog parks: Due to high levels of discomfort observed in the presence of unfamiliar dogs, Hufflepuff may be most comfortable as the only resident dog. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Hufflepuff has shown some discomfort while here at the care center, though she manages her stress well and has not escalated. She needs a slow approach and the ability to warm up to new people and new environments at her own pace. Hufflepuff should be permitted to initiate interactions and solicit attention when she feels comfortable, rather than being forced to interact. Hufflepuff should not be forced to submit to petting or handling, or forced into small spaces when she gives appropriate warning that she is uncomfortable. _X_Kennel presence – When placed inside a crate with another similarly sized dog, Hufflepuff would bark and become tense if anyone walked by. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Hufflepuff may show behavior similar to what she demonstrated when overcrowded inside a crate suitable for only one dog.
