A volunteer writes: Hot diggity dog! Are you ready to par-tay? And I don’t mean little cocktail franks, I mean the whole megilla! Lively, fun, energetic, playful, bouncy, loves toys, Miss Hot Dog is a party girl! She may be housetrained, but as a puppy may need a refresher course, and she’s all about fun, fun, fun. Toy? – yes please! Treats? But of course! A snuggle and a kiss? Yep, can do! Her coat gleams with good care and as the sun hits her the threads of gold and bronze are striking, her weight is perfect for her size, her tail never stops wagging, and her markings are unique and stunning. Miss Hot Dog is enthusiastic about everything, and some basic puppy training will make her the perfect companion. She can get a little mouthy in her excitement at, well, just about everything, but her obvious great joy in making friends and having some fun is contagious. So, if you’re ready to wear a perpetual smile, get some exercise on walks and playtime, our little Hot Dog is hoping you’ll stop by to meet her.
04/30/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/23/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/25/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still with eyes averted, and her tail tagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Hot Dog was slightly shy, moving away from the handler with quick motions. She quickly warmed up and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the didactic pair signals it is over. PLAYGROUP: Hot Dog is exuberantly playful when engaging with other dogs, and may be most compatible with other dogs who match or are tolerant of her energetic play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/23/17 During her initial medical exam, Hot Dog allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hot Dog so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Hot Dog appears to be slightly fearful, backing away from the handler with quick movements. She does become very social once comfortable social. It is important to always go slow and give Hot Dog the option to walk away from any social interaction. Hot Dog should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Hot Dog’s choice to approach a new person or thing. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Hot dog has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. As Hot dog plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration. Hot dog will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
04/25/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Hot Dog is exuberantly playful when engaging with other dogs, and may be most compatible with other dogs who match or are tolerant of her energetic play style. 4/25: When off leash with another dog, Hot Dog is initially uncomfortable with greeting. She becomes more comfortable engaging in bouncy play, jumping on and over the back of the social female dog. 4/28: Hot Dog greets a playful female with high tail, however, she will solicit play with playbows and paw slaps.
