01/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Handsome Horse with the schmushy face and fantastic ears is a stocky brindle boy, a bit shy in his kennel but then happy to come out for a walk. He goes potty as soon as we’re out the door, and while he pulls on the leash, it’s about bouncing with happiness at being out. Too cute! Surrendered by his person, we’re told that he is indeed housetrained, may be food reactive, lived with another dog and was friendly, hasn’t been around children and loves to play. Horse tossed around a plush toy in the back yard, getting short bursts of zoomies as he played. Nothing like watching a stocky boy do zoomies! He chased some pigeons out of our pen, greeted other dogs that passed with a nice tail wag and loved draping himself in my lap for some cuddling. He snorts when we cuddle and I love a dog who snorts!! Horse enjoyed some treats which he takes super gently, went back to play and then came back to cuddle. Fun and friendly, he’s looking for a new person to love. Is it you?
01/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Horse pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. Horse was calm and relaxed during handling. He was calm and relaxed following the assessor at the end of the leash during the tag test. Horse had minimal interest on the toy he smell it and grab it for a second and then turn away. He rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog with a tense body, ears erect and high tail wag. Horse was surrender to us. According to his previous owner he is friendly around stranger but the owner did not let him get close to the children. The owners think that he may guard his food. Horse does have a bite history, biting the owner on the hand when she cleaned food from his crate, though the bite did not break skin. Due to this Horse’s escalation to biting (possibly over resources), as well as to the recomendation of Horse’s previous owner, the behavior feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter and in a home without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Toy : 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell, grab it for a second, then turns away. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect. A1062438
