06/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Are you keen on the great outdoors? Ready to take on the world at a gallop? Do you love to play ball and give back rubs? Yes? Then you’re just the person I’ve been waiting for! My name’s Horris and I’m looking for a new sidekick with the same go-getter attitude as myself, a strong yet friendly type who understands how much more fun it is to run at life than wait for it to come to you. Oh sure, I know the commands for come and sit and I’m quite happy to follow them but at heart I’d rather be running after a ball or just around the park, and my perfect home would be with outgoing adults who feel the same way. And did I mention how good I am about ‘holding it’ until we get outside? You won’t find a cleaner kennel than mine! I don’t want to brag but everyone around here thinks I’m kind of a hunk and my volunteer friend said if Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson were a dog, he’d look a lot like me. Of course, being a macho man doesn’t mean I don’t go in for the soft stuff too. I crave attention and love as much as the next dog and will give you a big ol’ hug, roll onto your lap or back my butt into your knees for a massage any day of the week. So whaddaya say? Wanna be my loyal sidekick and bestest bud, like, forever? Come see me, Horris, at the Manhattan Care Center and we can go on the adventure of a lifetime…together!
06/09/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Horris came to us by way of the NYPD. So, we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed in the shelter environment. He was very interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. Horris did not engage in play during the tag interaction and followed the assessor at the end of the leash with relaxed body language. Due to our playgroup notes we believe that Horris can go to a home with an experienced adopter as the only resident dog at this time. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Horris has mostly displayed sexually motivated behavior when off leash with dogs. During his first interaction, he escalated in response to correction from another dog, beginning to vocalize and growl. It has not been observed how he reacts in response to correction since then. He has also engaged once in play with intent to mount a female. Horris has not been introduced to a male while in our care, and has displayed reactive behavior (tensing, growling) when greeting through a barrier. The behavior department feels that Horris should be given time to acclimate into a new environment before following up on his behavior around dogs, and should remain the only resident dog in a home until then. Due to the circumstances in which he arrived into our care, in-home behavior with dogs is not known.

Due to the circumstances in which he arrived into our care, in-home behavior with dogs is not known. When off leash with other dogs, Horris is sexually motivated. He escalates in response to correction, vocalizing and growling at the other dog. 6/3 update: Horris is sexually motivated and ignores solicitation. 6/4 update: Horris, again, is sexually motivated but will cease over time and explore the yard. 6/7: Horris engages in play with females with intent to mount. He is rense, reactive, and barks when a male dog walks past outside the pens.
