08/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Who doesn’t love a classic “buddy” movie especially when one of the “buddies” is a pup! So many scenes of the 1989 Tom Hanks classic “Turner & Hooch” are burned into my brain (am I dating myself?) but the best would have to be the “bath time” scene. While our 70 lbs Hooch is wee compared to his eponymous, Mastiff friend, he is just as filled with fun and sweetness, guaranteed to keep you laughing for just as long, and probably just as eager to spend extended time in a bathtub. Hooch was recently surrendered to our care and is said to have played well with adults, children, and a similarly-sized pup with whom he often interacted. Hooch is 3 years-old but seems to be infinitely young at heart. The moment after I pull open his kennel door, he plops his gorgeous, cinnamon self onto the ground and proceeds to give me his very best stand-up hug. From then on we are buddies and what do buddies do? They stick together! That’s precisely what Hooch and I did as we braved the relentless, August heat for our walk. Hooch handled his business straight away and off we went, determined to make our way to the park. When I grew weary (and oh how I did), Hooch spurned me on, returning to my dragging side and giving my sweaty palm a quick lick for support. Once there we both forgot our heat-filled fatigue as we sat under a tree and watched a festive BBQ unfold. Hooch was playful and composed throughout even maintaining his composure when an impromptu fireworks display started though startle him (and me!) it did. Hooch is a lover of life and would do best with an active owner who can fill his days with all the activity and fun our young boy requires. Everyone loves a buddy movie and everyone needs a buddy. Looking for one that’s loving, fun, loyal, and sweet? I think I know just the guy. Hooch is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
08/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hooch came into our center as an owner surrender on 8/12/2016. Behavior around cats is unknown. Owner reports Hooch is typically playful and tolerant around children but lately has been growling at 4 year old child in the home. Owner states Hooch isn’t bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. He may reportedly bark and growl when an unfamiliar person approaches the home, yard, owner or family member. He reportedly uses the bathroom outdoors on grass or indoors with wee wee pads. According to the owner, he knows the cue ‘sit’. Hooch is described as friendly, pushy, excitable, and playful with a high activity level. Hooch was very nervous upon intake and during his initial medical exam, did not allow much handling. He pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Hooch allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body tense. He lip licked, snarled and snapped at assessor during Sensitivity item, therefore remaining tactile items were skipped. Hooch showed brief bouts of enthusiasm for Toy, but quickly lost focus. Owner reports his favorite toys are Kongs filled with peanut butter, and likes to play tug. Hooch approached the helper dog, whining, lip lick, then quickly turned away. Hooch must be placed with a New Hope partner who can provide force-free based training as well as an appropriate environment where he can acclimate and decompress to help him succeed. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is tense Sensitivity: 5. Dog snarls and snaps Toy: 1. Minimal, brief bouts of enthusiasm, quickly loses interest. Dog-to-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears foward.
