05/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Honolulu came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Honolulu came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and social towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Honolulu follows, mouths the leash but slowly de-escalates during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Honolulu was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Honolulu rushes the gate and greets with a stiff posture, snarl and growl while pushing her muzzle into the fence. Due to this behavior Honolulu was muzzled before being allowed to interact with the helper dog. Once in the pen, she lunges at the helper dog and was removed from the pen. Honolulu would mouth the leash and will play tug a war but will slowly de-escalate and will need a distraction for her to let go, so the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter and we recommend no other dogs in the house hold. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Follows soft, mouths the leash and slowly de-escalates. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: Honolulu rushes the gate and greets with a stiff posture, snarl and growl while pushing her muzzle into the fence. Due to this behavior Honolulu was muzzled before being allowed to interact with the helper dog. Once in the pen, she lunges at the helper dog and was removed from the pen. 5/12 update: Honolulu has been showing concerning behavior both in holding and since she has been in the adoptions room. She has become rope reactive with both ACOs and Volunteers and has required a second handler to return her to her kennel. Additionally, her dog reactivity is increasing and most likely will continue to increase while in the Care Center. At this time, the Behavior Department feels that she is not a suitable candidate for our public adoptions room due to these behaviors and placement should be sought as soon as possible for her well-being.
