Hello, my name is Holiday Spice. My animal id is #12535. I am a male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 13-Nov-2017.
Holiday Spice is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only behavior determination). Holiday Spice has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (jumping, panting) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and may be a sign of stress in the shelter environment.

Dog was brought back by BACC staff, no handling was done by counselor during intake. Counselor went back to kennel after and the dog approached the front, wagging his tail and licking counselors hand.

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.

Summary:: During the handling assessment Holiday Spice was anxious(jumping, pulling). He became easily aroused jumping on the assessor, mouthing the leash, slowly de escalates.
Summary (1):: Holiday Spice was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 11/14: When off leash at the Care Center, Holiday Spice displays a soft body at first then He immediately becomes sexually motivated, focusing on her genital area. He briefly listens to handler interruptions and begins to explore the pens,before re-approaching the female greeter, and persistently sniffing her rear even after being interrupted by the handlers. 11/17: Holiday Spice snapped at the interruptions, so he was not let into the pens.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Holiday Spice so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Holiday Spice jumped up forcefully and moderately on the assessor during the assessment. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Holiday Spice.

Recommendations comments:: No children New hope only: Due to all noted concerns displayed care center environment, the behavior department recommends Holiday Spice be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Holiday Spice to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Holiday Spice to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Holiday Spice presents with outside of the care centers.

This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Holiday Spice, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Social Hyper Arousal: Holiday Spice has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to aggression (Biting the leash, jumping on the assessor, slowly de-escalate.) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Holiday Spice to new and unfamiliar situations.
