A volunteer writes:

Are you ready to get Hitched?!! Don’t worry, there’s no expensive ring to buy or guest list to wrangle but our gorgeous redheaded hunk is definitely looking for a lifetime commitment and he’s not going to settle for anything less than true love! Hitch is a real catch; well-trained, healthy, handsome and sociable, and his former owner had only great things to say about him. He’s lived with three children aged 4, 10 and 11 as well as a little Shih Tzu and was playful and affectionate with all. Hitch has been house trained and know commands for ‘sit’, ‘stay’, and ‘down’ and he’s always well-behaved with his family and strangers alike. His only ‘flaw’ is that he prefers to be left alone when eating, a very controllable situation for an experienced adopter and clearly no barrier to living in harmony with another dog. Hitch loves to explore and like all ‘working’ mixes he’s always thrilled to have a job to do, even if it’s just chewing on a toy. A home where he’ll enjoy plenty of attention and activity is a must and a friendly four-legged sibling would be his idea of heaven. Hitch is already neutered and ready to leave immediately but he’s still waiting for someone to ‘pop the question’. Will you be the lucky one who wins his heart?

BEHAVIOR:

Hitch came into our center as an owner surrender on 6/20/2016. He is described as initially shy, but soon warms up to strangers. It is reported Hitch lived with a 4, 10, and 11 year old child, as well as a small dog (shih tzu), playful and affectionate with all. Owner states Hitch growls if anyone attempts to touch his food while eating. Owner reports Hitch is housetrained, never has accidents, knows the cues ‘sit’, ‘stay’, and ‘down’. He is described as friendly, playful, and obedient. Hitch was friendly during intake, allowed all handling. He sat when asked and stayed when cued. Hitch walked well on leash for his relief walk. He was calm and friendly upon entering SAFER assessment room. Hitch pulled out of assessor’s hands on all three Look attempts. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail neutral, lip lick. Hitch initially followed at the end of the leash initially during Tag game, became playful and bouncy towards the end. He gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Hitch showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys playing with ropes. When off leash with other dogs, Hitch is tense when greeted, when the female greeter turns around, he sniffs and licks her rear. The Behavior Team feels Hitch would do best with an Experienced owner that does not have young children.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick.
Tag: 1. Dog follows initially but then assumes play position and joins the game towards the end.
Squeeze 1 / 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy 1: No interest.

Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Hitch is tense when greeted, when the female greeter turns around, he sniffs and licks her rear.

If you are local to the Tri-State, New England, and the general Northeast United States area, and you are SERIOUS about adopting or fostering one of the animals at NYC ACC, please read our MUST READ section for instructions, or email helpdogs@urgentpodr.org. Our experienced volunteers will do their best to guide you through the process.

* We highly discourage everyone from trusting strangers that send them Facebook messages, offering help, for it has ended in truly tragic events.*
