SAFER:
Hillary came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. During intake, she became nervous and stiff during microchip scan, but relaxed once it was done. Hillary was calm and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment area. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. Hillary stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, ears and tail neutral. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, soft. Hillary pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing before turning away. Hillary approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Hillary would do well with an Average adopter.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft
Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog pulls back paw
Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
ENRICHMENT NOTES
4/28: when attempting to leash her inside the kennel, Hillary would coward her head down and avoid the leash (no aggression) but when i finally got her on a rope her body was loose and wiggly. She appeared very excited to go outside. When off leash in the yard, Hillary is sooo sweet! often solicits my attention, she would curl up on my lap and give me kisses. We engaged in bouncy running play and played fetch. Going back into her kennel she walks right in and allows me to remove her leash with no problems at all.
