Hex has shown a range of behaviors in the care center, from discomfort and distance-increasing behaviors to attention-seeking. He was released for rescue placement only after his bite quarantine.

06/13/17 12:12 Basic information Hex is a 5 year old male large breed dog with no known medical conditions. Owner has had Hex for 5 years and is surrendering because of a bite. Socialization Hex has lived with a child the age of 2 and was relaxed and respectful with the child. Hex played gently with the child. Around other Children Hex is more distant, doesn’t play with them and will ignore them. Hex plays somewhat roughly with adults and likes to jump on them. Hex has lived with a ca when he was a puppy and was playful with the cat. Behavior is not known for beign around cats now. Hex has lived with other small dogs and is relaxed and playful with them. Hex plays gently with the other dogs. Around strangers Hex is friendly and outgoing. Hex has bit in the last 10 days. Behavior During storms and fireworks Hex is scared and will hide and bark. Hex will growl and try to bite if anyone goes near his food bowl, bones or treats. Hex isn’t bothered when being pushed off furniture or being held and restrained. Hex enjoys getting bathes and being brushed. He isn’t bothered when having his nails trimmed or when disturbed while sleeping. When someone unfamiliar approaches the house Hex will bark and smell them when they enter. For the new family to know Hex was described as playful and independent with a high activity level. Hex enjoys playing with squeaky toys, ropes and bones and knows how to play fetch and tug. When home with Hex he will follow you around seeking attention. Hex is house trained and goes on 3 walks a day. Hex is use to going to the bathroom on grass and cement. Hex pulls lightly on the leash and when off the leash will usually stay close by you. Hex is well behaved when left in the house alone but will whine sometimes. Hex knows the commands sit, down, stop and be quiet. For exercise Hex goes on runs. Hex eats Pedigree dry food 3 to 4 times a day. When its time for bed Hex likes to sleep on the bed with you. Behavior during intake Hex was excited during intake. He came up to the counselor with a wagging tail. Hex allowed ot be scanned and collared with a loose wiggly body. He enjoyed being pet and allowed all handling.

CANINE BEHAVIOR FOR: Hex A1115168 KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 6/13/17 Unaltered male, Owner surrender (Lived in previous home for 5 years) Previously lived with: Adults, 2 children Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Gentle, tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Playful Behavior toward cats: Relaxed Resource guarding: Yes, Hex will growl if his food bowl is approached. He will also growl over some toys. Bite history: Yes. Hex’s owner was arguing with another person and moved to hit her, when Hex lunged and bit her owner’s hand, leaving punctures. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Hex was described as playful and independent with a high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/21/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is stiff, body tense, and mouth closed, ears back. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is tense. No growling. Summary: Hex was wary and tense allowing minimal handling. He became increasingly tense as the assessment continued, and the handling items were ended after Sensitivity. PLAYGROUP: 6/16 Summary: Due to Hex’s DOH status, a muzzle is placed on him before he is allowed to enter the pen. He displays soft body language when greeting a novel female dog and allows her to greet him. He then becomes preoccupied with removing the muzzle and the session is ended. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/13/17 Behavior unknown MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/14/17 Hex allowed handle with caution, limited exam- very strong. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner describes Hex as an high energy/independent dog. Hex displayed low energy and movement throughout assessment. Hex will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: During his daily interactions with the Enrichment team, Hex has been calm and easy to handle, often soliciting attention and interaction.

RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_ No children (under 13)- Hex has warmed up to certain caretakers but has been timid and hesitant with others during his time at the care center. Due to this range of responses as well as his bite history, we recommend an adult-only home for Hex. _X_ Place with a New Hope partner Potential challenges: _X_ Resource guarding- Hex is reported to growl over food and toy resources. It is important to leave Hex alone while he is eating and never to take anything directly from his mouth. When he is asked to drop something he should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward Hex for relinquishing the item he has. We recommend training an “off” cue with treat rewards to manage this behavior, should it appear in a future home. _X_ Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- Reactivity towards other humans was noted by the previous owner (lunging, biting). Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed. _X_ Bite history- When highly aroused or frightened, Hex has shown a willingness to bite.
