I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 09/13/2017 from NY 11208, owner surrender reason stated was BITEPEOPLE.

Lethargy noted on rounds board Subjective: QARH. Laying down in the cage and not eager to stand until cage door is opened then becomes BAR and jumps eagerly out of cage. No c/s/v/d reported. 09/14/17 08:40 Hershey is an 11 year old altered male Small dog; he came to his home when he was 8 weeks as a gift to his family. Hershey is being surrender due to behavior issues and has no known health issues or injures. He has no vet record. Around stranger Hershey is shy he will bark and growl when approached quickly. He has never been around children. When Hershey sees another dog is barks and tries to hide, although he has never bitten another animal he has bitten his owners before, due to Hershey being anxious during car rides, food and toys guarding and tense during grooming. When someone goes near Hershey’s food bowl while eating, tries to pick up his toys Hershey will snap and growl. During a bath Hershey is timid and very tense, he does not like to be brushed and will bite. He was described as ,Affectionate, Pushy, and anixous with a high activity level. He likes playing with squeaky and stuufed toys. he is feed dry food of the science diet brand 1 1/2 cup once a day. Hershey is house trained andonly uses wee-wee pads. When left home alone is well behaved and sleeps most of the day. Hershey has never been crate trained and knows command sit when giving a treat. He goes on walks on leash and wil run away if taking of leash. Upon intake Hershey was timid for the first mintues, he tail was between his legs and his head was low, once his owner left alone, he began to relax with counselor even approach the couselor for soft pets. Hershey allowed the counselor to collar him and hod him with no issues.

KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile Date of intake 9/13/2017 Neutered male, owner surrender (in previous home for 11 years, since he was a puppy) Previously lived with: Behavior toward strangers: Growls and snaps Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Barks and tries to hide Resource guarding: Will snap or growl if his food is touched while eating. Bite history: Hershey may bite or snap when attempting to lift him up to get in and out of the car. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate, pushy and anxious with a high activity level. Other notes: Hershey gets car sick and will bite when picked up from the car. He is tense when being groomed, may try to bite when brushed. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 9/22/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture, mouth open. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, slight lip quiver. Tag 2 . Dog follows slowly, turns toward hand on last pass, lip quiver. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, tense, lip raise Flank squeeze 1/ 2: 3. Dog closes mouth, lip raise Toy: 1 Minimal interest. This may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys squeaky and stuffed toys. Summary: Hershey was a bit timid upon entering assessment room, but once warmed up climbed into assessor’s lap. He appeared to be physically uncomfortable with certain touch, potentially painful/geriatric, and gave appropriate warning signals (lip quiver/lip raise). INTAKE BEHAVIOR Date of intake 9/14/2017 During intake, Hershey was timid but warmed u. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 9/13/2017 During his initial medical exam, Hershey allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His owner describes Hershey as having a high level of activity In the care center. Hershey displays as an older dog with a low level of energy, trembling and a bit unsteady.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope _X_No children (under 13) – Due to how uncomfortable hershey is with touch, we feel an adult only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Due to noted concerns, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who is able to provide any necessary resources in a stable home environment will best set Hershey up for success in a future adoptive home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity- Hershey has shown an uncomfortability with touch. It is important to always go slow and give Hershey the option to walk away. He should never be forced to submit to handling or petting when uncomfortable. Hershey has recently shown extra sensitivity to being picked up and lifting him should be avoided until the source of his discomfort has been explored.
