HERCULES – 8799
Hello, my name is Hercules. My animal id is #8799. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 03-Oct-2017.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Behavior Determination: Experienced, no young children A volunteer writes: Hercules is a very pleasant young man to spend time with. For one, he is really cute in his shiny black and white tuxedo, even though he is a bit on the thin side. For another, and more important, he is a very friendly and sociable little guy who likes his peers, big, small, males or females (he is very good in playgroups with other dogs) and is quite affectionate, too, without being overwhelming. He is happy to come out of his den, walks very nicely on the leash, does his business on the way, and does not have mean thoughts against the birds. Hercules loves treats, jumps or sits for them, but does not search my bag or look for scraps of food on the ground. He does not play ball yet, but absolutely loves to come on the bench next to me for caresses, hugs, butt scratches, and rolls on his side for belly rubs. Hercules is really a very sweet pooch who put all his might in wanting to be everybody’s friend. If your heart desires an easy going, dog-friendly and loving forever best friend, come and meet Hercules at the Manhattan Care Center.
Hercules is at risk due to CIRDC.

He allowed all handling but became a bit tense when in possession of the toy, displaying a potential for resource guarding. Summary (1): Hercules has succeeded best when engaged with respectful female dogs. Hercules displayed concerning behavior when introduced to another male dog, becoming tense and repeatedly attempting to mount. The behavior department feels that based on behavior observed in our care, Hercules may be most compatible with respectful female dogs. Slow introductions are recommended. 10/4: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Hercules is polite when greeting, roams away. Summary (2): 10/5: Hercules is tense, follows, attempts to mount a male dog. Summary (3): 10/6: Hercules greets a female dog politely and wanders the pen. Date of intake: 3-Oct-2017 Summary: Upon intake, Hercules was calm, social, and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hercules so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable Recommendations: No young children (under 5) Recommend no dog parks Recommendations comments: No young children: Due to potential for resource guarding displayed no his assessment, we recommend a home without young children. No dog parks: Due to Hercules’ concerning behavior around male dogs, dog park settings are not recommended. Potential challenges: Resource guarding Potential challenges comments: Resource guarding: Hercules became a bit tense when in possession of a toy on his behavior assessment.
