10/31/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Herbert…What a noble name…for yes, an elegant looking dog. I would love to see a DNA analysis on Herbert as I can not quite “place” his breed mix. A Mastiff, a Boxer, a sprinkle of Pitie…. Whatever was ‘thrown in the pot” led to a beautiful pooch. Although a bit thin, Herbert is rather trim and dressed in a perfect red golden coat that shimmers in the autumn sun. His eyes are bright, intelligent and his smile so gentle. Herbert was a little anxious when he arrived at the care center. He is quite a friendly character now, looking for ward to his walks with volunteers and being treated while he mingles, leash free with lots of people in a pen. He sits very nicely on command, takes treats politely from the hand and enjoys caresses. He is a good walker, marks slightly his territory and pulls only toward females, big and small in the street. I guess that he likes ladies. He is an unaltered male….In playgroups , he has learned to appreciate the company of his peers and is having a good time with males and females. I love my time with Herbert. He is a good and well balanced dog that is comfortable with people and dogs alike, friendly and affectionate, well mannered too.. I hope Herbert’s description will entice you to visit him here at the Manhattan Care Center. He will make a great forever best friend.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/27/16 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, wagging tail. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Herbert showed NO concern during the behavior assessment. PLAYGROUP: Herbert mostly keeps to himself during interaction, only at times displaying interest in approach and sniffing calm dogs. He does not appear comfortable with play and often corrects or barks in response to being solicited. Based on observation made in our care, the behavior department recommends slow introductions to resident dogs, and feels he may be most comfortable around calm, respectful dogs. MEDICAL Behavior: 10/27/16 During his initial medical examination, Herbert appeared tense but tolerated handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (Suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
10/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Initially Herbert was uncomfortable with play and would typically greet all dogs before exploring the yard. With each interaction, however, Herbert has become more comfortable and will now engage in vocal, running play with male and female dogs. Based on observation made in our care, the behavior department recommends slow introductions to resident dogs to allow him time to acclimate to his new environment. 10/26: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Herbert approaches and offers brief, polite greeting. When solicited with play, Herbert does not reciprocate, and instead walks away. 10/27: Herbert initially only keeps to himself. He eventually stops to sniff the other dog (female). When solicited with play, Herbert only very briefly reciprocates before losing interest. 10/28: Herbert interacts in a larger group of male and female dogs. He is a bit sexually motivated but mostly wanders the pen and seeks attention from handlers. 10/30-31: Herbert roams and keeps to himself in the pen of playful dogs. He becomes tense when approached and solicited by a playful male dog. 11/1: Herbert is anxious and paces the pen while barking. 11/2: Herbert keeps to himself mostly in a pen of other dogs, approaches to sniff less playful dogs. He barks at dogs playing throughout the pen. 11/3: Herbert chases a playful dog and vocalizes while engaging in this running chase. 11/4: Herbert engages in vocal, running play with males and females.
