07/03/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/03/17 18:53 Client found dog roaming the street near her house and then later he was on her property. She approached the dog when she saw him wagging his tail and he was receptive to being pet and receiving attention. She offered him dry food and he ate it without any aggresssion, growling, or guarding. He played fetch with her in a friendly manner, dropped the stick when she called him back and was not showing aggressive behavior such as growing or guarding. She saw him interacting with other dogs and she stated he acted calm around them. Tail wagging, no growling. She did not see him interact with any cats, but did state that when other children were walking by or around the dog he wagged his tail and did not growl or lunge towards them. She stated that he knew and responded to commands such as “sit, stay, down, and paw”. She suspects he was someones pet by the way he was acting and behaving in such a friendly manner.

07/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/03/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/06/17 Summary: Due to his severe stress levels, Henry is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: According to Henry’s finder, she saw him interacting with other dogs and she stated he acted calm around them. Henry immediately beings displaying stereotypic behaviors by spinning and chasing his tail in the pen. He is unable to be interrupted by the handlers. When the female greeter dog enters the pen, Henry initially stops spinning and greets her with a loose and wiggly body, but his arousal level quickly increases and he begins barking at her and snapping towards her through the gap in the gate. Due to concerns for his stress level, an attempt to muzzle was not made and he was not introduced. The Behavior Department recommends that Henry initially not be placed with other dogs until given adequate time to decompress from the stressful shelter environment. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/05/17 During his initial medical examination, Henry allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Henry has been active and enthusiastic though this is displayed along with stereotypical shelter behaviors, Henry appears to be becoming increasingly frustrated. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Henry will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Henry is showing increasing signs of severe stress in the care centers, constantly spinning in circles in his kennel and out, unable to readily settle. While he was initially social and tolerant of handling, he remains challenging to manage in the care centers despite our best enrichment efforts; because we cannot be certain of the depth of his frustration and underlying anxieties, we believe it is in Henry’s best interest to be placed with a New Hope rescue partner who can allow for a period of decompression and reassess behavior in a stable home environment. Henry is unable to thrive in the care center and is at-risk for deterioration the longer he stays in the kennel environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Henry’s arousal level when greeting a dog in the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that he initially not be taken to dog parks until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: (See in-shelter observations) Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: An exaggerated response to stressful “novel” stimuli (the sight of other dogs/humans, direct touch, toy items, food items, etc.) which could potentially leave the Henry living in a constant state of stress and agitation. Henry’s low threshold for arousal rapidly escalates and is unable to readily recover. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Henry to new and unfamiliar situations _X_Anxiety: Henry has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking), spinning, continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and his known history does not report this though it is likely due to the nature of the shelter environment. We cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment though recommend practicing positive force-free reward based training when introducing or exposing Henry to new and unfamiliar situations.
