02/17/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/17/17 16:20 On intake, counselor opened crate gently and placed the leash in. She gently leashed him up and he walked out of the crate nicely. Counselor brought him inside and he sat when asked so she gave him a treat in which he took out of her hands and ate. He kept jumping up onto the chairs, counter, counselor etc but allowed all petting of his head and back and loved when counselor allowed him to place paws up onto her and she rubbed his ears. He sat and counselor collard him and brought him over to the area for pictures where he stood still. When counselor opened a drawer to grab something, Henry saw a toy and took it out of the drawer and began to play. He rolled over and counselor rubbed his belly. After, he laid down and gently placed his head on top of his new toy.

02/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/17/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Other notes: Upon intake, Henry was lunging and barking at other dogs. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 2/20/2017 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions, numerous shoulder rubs. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans in and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, ears back, mouth closed, body neutral. Tag: 2. Dog is a bit distracted, becomes playful mid game, jumps high and with moderate intensity onto assessor towards end of game, settles easily. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog does not pull back paw, sniffs and licks hand. Toy: 3. Dog keeps a firm hold, body a bit stiff, required a treat as a trade up. Summary: Henry walked nicely on leash into SAFER assessment room. He displayed high energy and movement, though remained soft. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Due to the concerning behavior Henry has displayed both on and off-leash around other dogs, Henry may succeed best as the only resident dog at this time. Due to observed reactivity to dogs on leash, handlers should remain cautious and vigilant when walking Henry through areas with high amounts of dog traffic. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/17/17 During his initial medical exam, Henry was very active. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Henry so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Henry displayed high energy and movement in SAFER assessment room. He may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Single-pet home (see playgroup) _X_Recommend no dog parks (see playgroup) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the severity of observed on leash reactivity towards other dogs and handlers in addition to playgroup information, we believe Henry may succeed best with placement through a New Hope rescue who can further assess this behavior in a more stable environment. Potential challenges: _X_Social Hyper-arousal: Henry rapidly escalates to a high state of arousal at the sight of other dogs on leash and is unable to appropriately settle, while he has not directed any frustration onto handlers, we cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of this environment. _X_Resource guarding: Henry became a bit stiff when approached while he kept a firm grip on Toy. He began shredding the toy but relinquished it when he was tossed a treat on the other side of the room. Henry should be left alone while eating or drinking, and toys or treats should not be attempted to be taken away from him. Henry would benefit from learning the cue ‘drop’ and trade up games. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Henry has shown concern in the care center when being walked on leash, showing a low threshold for frustration and arousal towards other dogs and at times, human handlers. Henry attempts to actively lunge, bark and growl, unable to settle with any form of distraction.
02/18/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Due to the concerning behavior Henry has displayed both on and off-leash around other dogs, Henry may suceed best as the only resident dog at this time. Due to observed reactivity to dogs on leash, handlers should remain cautious and vigilant when walking Henry through areas with high amounts of dog traffic. When greeting another dog through the gate, Henry appeared stiff, then lunged toward the other dog. For this reason, the decision was made to muzzle him. Once muzzled and off leash with the other dog, Henry remained stiff but focused on removing the muzzle.
