06/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Heartbeat came into our center along with his littermate as an owner surrender after multiple bite incidents and killing the family’s pet rabbit. According to the previous owners, Heartbeat lived two adults, children ages 5, 7, 9 and 10. Heartbeat has lived with three other dogs (two Pit Bulls and one Maltese), two Chinchillas, one rabbit and one cat, got along with all. Per the owner, kids on the other side of the fence would antagonize the dog which ended up in a bite situation. Heartbeat walked nicely on leash for his relief walk, no pulling. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted, lip lick. Heartbeat stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral. He was distracted and unresponsive to touch during Tag game. Heartbeat gently pulled his paw back on first Squeeze attempt, lip curled and snarled on second attempt. He showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys playing tug with his littermate. Heartbeat approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level. Due to various reports of biting, Heartbeat must be placed with a New Hope partner that can provide proper behavior modification before considering adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, lip lick. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 1: 4. Dog raises lip, snarls. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
