03/20/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Pretty and well cared for Hazel Re was left with us with very little information…Too big, too active, no time…..Hazel Re is a beautiful gal, healthy, well groomed and dressed in a very unusual coat with a Catahoula print. Her face carries a gorgeous smile and her eyes light up with a tennis ball or a treat.. She pulls on the leash (like so many dogs…), can sit on command and appears housetrained. She has an eye for the pigeons and the squirrels and does bark at other dogs met in the yard or the street. In playgroups with her peers, though, Hazel Re does not get into any argument. Although a little stressed at the begining of her stay, Hazel loosened up… She comes when called, sits by my feet, accepts caresses and even gives a brief kiss. She even runs after the ball, catches it and briefly mouths it. She takes treats gently from my hand. Hazel Re did well on her behavioral evaluation and can be met in our adoptions quarters. She is a gorgeous young damsel who probably needs a little bit of socialization with people and other pooches to be the perfect pet we all dream to have by our side. Hazel Re is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping to soon leave us…with you.
03/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hazel Re came into our center as an owner surrender on 3/15/2016. It is reported Hazel Re lived with a 10 year old child, relaxed and playful/exuberant in play. Owner reports she is also playful around other dogs but may play rough. It is reported she is housebroken and well behaved when left alone in the home. Hazel Re is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy, and excitable. with a very high activity level. She allowed all handling during intake with wagging tail and relaxed body. Hazel Re was high energy upon entering the SAFER assessment room, whining at times to solicit attention. She jumped up to lick assessor’s face during Look item. Hazel Re leaned her body away from assessor during Sensitivity item, but allowed the touch. She playfully engaged during Tag game, running and jumping, grabbed leash briefly but released right away. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licked assessor’s hand. Hazel Re showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports she likes to play with balls. When off leash with other dogs, Hazel Re is reactive through the barrier, is a bit tense in the pen but does not pursue or interact. The Behavior Team feels Hazel Re would do well in an Average home. She may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, mouth closed, ears back Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks hand. Toy 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Hazel Re is reactive through the barrier, is a bit tense in the pen but does not pursue or interact.
03/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Hazel Re has been uncomfortable with other dogs during her time at the care center. She allows sniffing but maintains a tense body, and she often stiffens and barks at dogs through a barrier. Her owner reports around other dogs she’s playful and exuberant but somewhat rough. Based on this information the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Hazel Re into a home with other dogs as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new surroundings before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Hazel Re is reactive through the barrier, is a bit tense in the pen but does not pursue or interact. 3/17 updated: Hazel Re continues to display a tense body, and avoids interaction. 3/22 update: Hazel Re briefly approaches to sniff a calmer, male dog. She becomes more preoccupied with seeking exit. 3/23 update: Hazel Re is a bit tense and begins to bark in response to playful vocalization from another dog. 3/24 update: Hazel Re is tense when sniffed and will ignore the other dog once he walks away.
