06/30/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/30/17 20:35 Basic Information: Hazel and her sibling Hennessy came into the shelter together. They are both 3 years old and were in the same home for the past 3 yrs, unfortunately they could not be kept due a new baby. They have never been taken to the vet. Socialization: Around strangers and children they are both known as very friendly/outgoing, respectful, relaxed and playful and they play very gentle with both adults and children. They have been socialized with dogs and are respectful and playful with the other dogs and will play gentle. No records of either pet bitting another animal or person or being socialized with cats. Behavior: Both dogs will only use the bathroom outdoors. They are unbothered when it comes to storms and loud noises, having their toys, food or treats touched while they are eating, being held or restrained, being given a bath or being brushed or having their nails trimmened and when someone unfamiliar approaches their home or owner. For a New Family to Know: They are both described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy, excitable and independent. They have medium activity levels, love to play, rarely seek attention when they’re home with you, enjoy playing with balls, squeak toys and stuffed animals. They have been kept mostly indoors, like to sleep on the floor, eat both wet and dry Pedigree at least 2x a day, are considered very house-trained, use the bathroom on the grass outside, are well behaved when they are left alone, do well in kennels for about 8hrs, know how to sit, stay, come and Hennessy knows how to give paw. They prefer going outside at least 2-3x a day, pull lightly on leash and will wander off leash but come back when they are called. Intake: Upon intake, Hazel and her sibling Hennesy allowed all handling, being collared, having their picture taken and being placed in a kennel.

A volunteer writes: An energetic beauty with a smile so bright she could be a toothpaste spokesdog, Hazel isn’t just bursting onto the scene, she IS the scene, and this fresh and funny gal’s ready to rock her way into your heart today! It’s impossible to be bored with Hazel around. She’s a non-stop party pup who can’t get enough of toys and happily grins her way through fetching a ball, following commands to earn a treat, or settling in for a full body massage from her latest fan. Surrendered to our care with athletic big sister Hennessy, Hazel’s very picky as to which dogs she’s willing to meet. But don’t worry, she’s anything but when it comes to making new human friends, and I guarantee you’ll be welcomed with open arms–especially if you come bearing snacks! She does pull on leash but seems very house trained, already knows commands for come and sit, takes treats super gently and is always happy to share her toys. Full of fun and not for the faint of heart, Hazel has a big personality. But with room to roam, plenty of playtime and an active adopter with eyes only for her, she could be the loyal BFF of your dreams. Hazel’s waiting patiently at our Manhattan Care Center, ask to meet her today!
07/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 6/30/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for three years) Previously lived with: Adults, a baby, and another dog Behavior toward strangers: Friendly, outgoing, respectful, relaxed, and playful Behavior toward children: Friendly, outgoing, respectful, relaxed, and playful Behavior toward dogs: Respectful and playful with the dog she lived with (her sister) and other dogs Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Hazel is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy, excitable and independent with a medium level of activity. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/2/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up high. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Hazel displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment, jumping up on the assessor repeatedly throughout her assessment. She was social throughout and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 7/1: When introduced off leash, Hazel engages in bouts of exuberant play with male and female dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Hazel allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During her initial medical exam, Hazel was active and social, she allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Hazel’s previous owner described her as having a medium level of activity. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to the high amount of jumping and movement on her assessment, we recommend an adult only home at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Hazel displays a high level of jumping up on people. She becomes excited quickly and has trouble settling. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Hazel is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. Her adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that she be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish her strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
