09/10/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I’m not usually a kiss and tell kind of a gal, but when my date is Haylen and we kiss….well, let me tell you – he’s worth bragging about! He’s a gorgeous boy wearing a gray and white coat, his teeth are sparkly white, his tail never stops wagging and he’s super affectionate. A walk with Haylen goes something like this: step, step, hug, step, hug, step, step hug and repeat! He gives the best stand up hugs, and in the park he drapes himself over my lap for more kisses. Showing off his sit in exchange for a treat, he takes it gently and gives me that big smile pitties are known off. Wagging his tail at every person who passes by, he elicits tons of compliments on his good looks and affectionate demeanor. Beautifully cared for, his weight is perfect for his size, his coat clean and groomed, and his enthusiastic personality a joy. The perfect start to my day, he made me smile and laugh and some well placed hugs and kisses added to it all. Lucky person who adopts this great dog gets to start every day with a smile, a hug and a kiss. I can’t imagine anything better, can you?
09/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Haylen came into our center along with another dog as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He allowed all handling upon intake. Haylen pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Haylen displayed high energy and movement upon entering the SAFER assessment room, jumping up onto desk, knocking things over, jumping on staff. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body wiggly, tail wag. Haylen leaned into assessor and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, open mouth, body soft. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit low on each pass, overall soft. Haylen pulled back his paw on both Squeeze attempts. He playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip with loose body. The Behavior Team feels Haylen would do best with an Experienced adopter. He would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well focus and body awareness in regards to jumping up. Haylen will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, and play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
09/11/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Haylen greets with a soft, ‘wiggly’ body and wagging tail. He postures to mount the female greeter dog, however briefly ceases when she offers correction. It can be taken into consideration that Haylen is still unaltered. He engages in bouts of soft play and remains interested when solicited. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog while at the care center. The behavior team feels that Haylen could potentially be adopted to a home with another dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction. He arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home setting.
