06/21/16 15:10 Hawk is a young adult male APBT mix. He was found outside and brought to ACC by police. Hawk was friendly, excited, and playful with staff during his medical exam, jumping up and mouthing the leash. They gave him a toy and he became more relaxed.
06/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Holy housetrained Hawk!!! Based on how quickly Hawk ran out the door and how much he ‘went’, I’m guessing that Hawk is housetrained! After taking care of business we head to the park, Hawk walking nicely on leash, pulling slightly from time to time. He’s a gorgeous dog in his clean tan coat, his tail wags, his amber eyes alight with friendship and fun. Noticing, but ignoring, other dogs we pass on our walk he loves his plush toy, happy to carry it in his mouth as we walk, and when we stop for some photos he tosses it in the air playfully. Hawk enjoys petting placing his front paws in my lap allowing me better access to his cute ears, and shares his toy with me as I pet him. His fun, friendly and playful personality is looking for an equal match to his own; a person who’s ready for an effervescent, fun, playful sidekick. I envision Hawk on long walks, and perhaps some games meant for mental stimulation as he’s a smart dog and it shows. Heavenly Hawk, who is a favorite of one of our staffers, is looking for his soulmate……is it you?
06/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hawk was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up and mouthy (moderate). He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. Hawk did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction. He took the toy away but had soft body language. Hawk show a bit of concern during the tag interaction he became a bit over arousal. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, (moderate). Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup notes: Hawk is sexually motivated, and growls when corrected by the helper dog.
06/15/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Hawk has mostly displayed sexually motivated behavior (he is currently unaltered), becoming frutrated and growling in response to correction. He corrects playful behaviors and may not be completely comfortable with interaction. He arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a single-dog only home for Hawk as well as allowing him time to acclimate into his new home before following up on his behavior around other dogs. 6/15: When off leash with other dogs, Hawk offers brief sniffing, then persistantly attempts to mount the female greeter. 6/16: Hawk is sexually motivated, and growls when corrected by the helper dog. 6/17 update: Hawk is a bit anxious in the yard. He offers a strong correction when a dog approaches to greet.
