A volunteer writes: Ears? Did someone say ears? We’ve got ears!!! And those adorable bunny ears are connected to the sweetest face, which is connected to the cutest, plumpest little puppy body. And did someone say holy head tilt? We’ve got that, too! Miss Hartford can be a bit shy at first meeting, but an easy walk, a couple of treats and a little conversation is all it takes to win her heart. She seems to be housetrained, going potty as soon as we were out the door, and a short walk landed us on my favorite door stoop on which we cuddled and kissed and lazily watched the world go by. So many people stopped to ask me about this little peanut, as she’s that cute, that adorable, and that fun. Sitting for treats, she takes them gently, gets a bit puppy mouthy in good fun, and then we just hang out like old buddies. In keeping with her initial shyness, she was also a bit shy in her first playgroup, greeting politely and occasionally soliciting play. This is a big, noisy, chaotic place for a sensitive puppy, but Miss Hartford is figuring it out quickly. What she’d like to figure out even more quickly is how to win your heart. It won’t take long, I promise.
07/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Hartford A1119183 KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/21/17 Intact female, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/23/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs her shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is not stiff. Summary: Hartford displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment. She jumped up repeatedly on the assessor in a social manner, was extremely mouthy, and grabbed the leash in her mouth; unable to be readily distracted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Hartford is highly social and playful when engaging with dogs in the care center. She is polite when greeting other dogs, and participates in bouncy play. Hartford is tolerant of rougher, mouthy play, however appears most interested in bouncy, running styles of play. The behavior department feels that based on these observations, Hartford may potentially be placed into a home with other dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 07/21/17 Upon intake, Hartford allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/21/17 During her medical examination, Hartford allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hartford so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult-only home (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13): Due to Hartford’s jumpy and mouthy behaviors, as well as her low threshold for arousal, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Hartford was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Hartford puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. _X_Leash-biting: Hartford is quick to grab and chew on the leash. While walking Hartford, she should be rewarded with treats for not having the leash in her mouth. She can be given something to carry in her mouth, such as a toy or ball, so that she cannot grab the leash. People should never attempt to play tug with her with the leash.
