08/31/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: My name isn’t Sally. But I wish it were. A lifetime of happiness with my perfect match, a.k.a., 3 year-old Harry? That’s a Hollywood ending if ever there were one. I don’t know if it was his ebony coat, his gorgeous white markings, his long, ever-wagging tail, or those adorable bat ears, but I was taken with Harry right from the start. Easily leashed, we quickly set off on our walk where Harry shows me he’s more than just a handsome face. He handles his business straight away, and then trots calmly and easily right by my side (always on the side). Once at the park, Harry is nothing but smiles. He ignores passing pups, both large and small, skips excitedly towards a pile of leaves, jumps in it, and then gleefully looks up at me, his eyes full of light. It’s abundantly clear to everyone that Harry’s having a great time, with one passerby even exclaiming, “I’ll have what he’s having!” We pause on a bench where Harry snuggles up against me, showering me with kisses and endless, furry hugs. It’s now just us two, alone in perfect peace and quiet, Harry laying across my lap as if we’ve been friends for years. I once heard, “when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” Well it took me minutes to realize that about Harry. How long will it take you? Harry is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
08/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Harry pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. Harry did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction and was a bit difficult to distract. He took the toy away but had soft body language. Harry rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog with his body tense, ears erect and high tail wag. Harry shows a bit of concern during the tag interaction showing a low threshold for arousal. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter without children who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect. helper:A1086800
