01/12/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/12/16 12:16 Client stated he fed Harmione. She ate very fast but allowed finder the put his hand in bowl she payed no attention to the hand. She also got along with his female dog (also a Pit Bull). She had a wagging tail and the two dogs were relaxed with each other. He stated Harmione was also around his 4 year old for the night and she was playful and gentle and the four year old touched her bowl while the finder held her leash at one point and she waged her tail and kept eating. Behavior during intake: Harmione allowed me to pet her, collar her and take pictures. She sat on command, took treats gently with a wagging tail and jumped up gently for attention.
01/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We so would love to know what kind of life our stray dogs and cats lead before landing in the care center. Our imagination wanders and wonders and we assume, right or wrong, based on their looks and behaviors: who are they… really? Hermione is one of those souls who haunts my mind. She is a pretty and gentle little gal, a grey mouse, overly thin who saw many litters. Life might not have been a bed of roses. Still, although timid, she is sociable, friendly and even quite affectionate, seeking comfort in my lap or my arms. She runs after, catches a ball and savors it under the bench. She obviously knows what it is. She has knowledge of other dogs and mingles politely with them in playgroups. I really like Hermione, a lovely damsel who has kept all her grace and femininity despite her harsh life and I guess, this is why we named her Hermione after the pretty Harry Potter’s heroin. Hermione has won my heart. I hope she will win yours, that you will give her a chance and take her home to experience a loving and wonderful life… in your hands. Hermione is at the Manhattan Care Center.
01/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hermione has shown potential food or resource guarding in her kennel in the care center. When given food enrichment items (ice block, stuffed Kong) she has growled at the human standing near her. She did not show this behavior with her finder or the finder’s young child, both of whom touched the food or food bowl, though Hermione did show discomfort with having her resource touched, eating more quickly when her bowl was approached. She appears to give clear warnings (tensing, eating faster, growling) but we caution that she will need an adopter comfortable with managing resource guarding behavior and prepared to provide any necessary positive reinforcement-based behavior modification. We advise that Hermione’s food bowl should never be touched while she is eating, as that can encourage guarding behavior, and nothing should ever be taken from her mouth. Hermione should be taught “drop” and trade up games should be played to build positive associations with dropping things she is holding on to. 1/14 SAFER: Hermione walks calmly on leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Hermione was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was easy to handle when chewing on toys. Hermione did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Hermione is anxious, runs past the greeter dog, and seeks to exit the yard. When the greeter dog approaches to sniff, Hermione offers a strong correction.
01/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Hermione has been anxious when interacting with dogs off leash, typically ignoring or avoiding the other dog. She entered the care center as a stray so her in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Based on these observations the behavior department recommends Hermione have a pre-adoption interaction before going to a home with another dog as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new home before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Hermione is anxious, runs past the greeter dog, and seeks to exit the yard. When the greeter dog approaches to sniff, Hermione offers a strong correction. 1/16 update: Hermione is anxious, whining at the gate and attempting to exit. She ignores the other dog when he attempts to interact with her.
