02/24/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/24/16 10:02 BASIC INFO Harley A1065896 is an approximately 2 year old American Pitbull Terrier Mix. He is being surrendered to the shelter because he was found tied to a pole in The Bronx by St. James Park. Finder brought to ACCNYC. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE Harley had his tail tucked, did not take treats. He allowed handling, collaring and photos. He struggled a bit and had to be picked up and placed into kennel.
02/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Harley came into the shelter after he was found tied to a pole, and we are really hoping that his next ride is to a far plusher joint than this one. Say, a home with a loving family??? He’s a timid boy at first–his digs are a little on the noisy side, so completely understandable–but once outside, he leans in for snuggles and hugs. He’s in pretty rough shape–he could use some food and a nice warm bath–but still his fur is as soft as a Steiff stuffed animal, and he is as snuggly as one, too. He appears house trained, hops back into his kennel without complaint, and has won our hearts. We’re banking on him winning yours, too!
02/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Harley is a bit fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Harley had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Harley is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Harley is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Harley greets and offers a few brief bounces. He is tolerant of appeasement signals from the greeter (muzzle licking).
02/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Harley has shown brief interest in interacting and play, but has not yet engaged fully. It has been observed on one occasion that Harley began to growl when greeting a male dog through a barrier. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Harley before placing him into a home with other dogs. He arrived into our care as a stray so in-home behaviors with dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Harley greets and offers a few brief bounces. He is tolerant of appeasement signals from the greeter (muzzle licking). 3/1 update: Harley greets and shows interest in interacting. He growls at a male through the fence. 3/2 update: Harley offers brief polite greeting to a female dog. He briefly postures to mount but doesn’t follow through.
