08/03/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/03/16 09:27 BASIC INFO Harlem A1083920 is an American Pitbull Terrier Mix. He was bought at a pet store in November 2015. The main reason for surrender is that the owner works alot of hours, and does not have time for him. Harlem does not have any health concerns. SOCIALIZATION Harlem is very friendly around strangers. He has lived with an 11 year old child. Harlem plays exhuberantly and gentle with the child. Harlem has never lived with another animal. Harlem has never bitten anyone. BEHAVIOR The only behavior issue that Harlem has is that he needs training. He is super hyperactive and takes him a while to listen to commands. Harlem allows you to take away his food bowl ,water bowl, or toy away without a problem. Harlem allows you to bathe him and will actually try to jump inside of the tub with whoever is bathing. If an unfamiliar approaches the doorway, he barks. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Harlem is best described as friendly, affectionate, playful and full of excitement. He has a very high activity level as he is still a growing puppy. when home, he follows you around. He enjoys playing tug with his rope toy. He has been kept mostly indoors. Harlem eats Diamond’s Natural, no grain, dry brand dog food mixed with ground beef. He is potty trained and does not have a preference where he goes. Harlem is crate trained with both open and closed door. Owner stated that he was well behaved in his crate. for exercise he is walked on the leash of which he pulls very hard. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE Harlem was very hyperactive, he allowed all handling, collaring and photos.
08/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Comfortably cuddly, goofily gorgeous, playful, silly, friendly and energetic as the day is long, Harlem may be a lot of things but boring ain’t one of ’em! A huskily built puppy whose previous owner seems to have been a bit too liberal with the treats, Harlem acts exactly like the rambunctious toddler he is, constantly on the go and ready to leap into your arms at the slightest encouragement. He’s thrilled by the outside world and wants to get up close and personal with everything and everyone he sees, so a strong harness when out for a walk is a must, as not every dog in the park is as friendly as this not-so-little fella. Harlem knows what it means to be a family dog, and we’re told he lived in happy harmony with an 11 year old child, which is easy to picture, because for all his jumpiness and non-stop energy, he actually has a super soft nature and the most gentle, loving soul. His favorite things to do are play and cuddle, and he loves having a bath so much he’ll try and jump into the tub with you! Harlem’s former family crate-trained him, and he’s a star when it comes to taking appropriate bathroom breaks, but that’s where his ‘schooling’ ended. With so much energy to burn and inquisitiveness to satisfy, he will need (as all puppies do) plenty more exercise and training to keep him happy and healthy. As a little bundle of joy from the pet store, Harlem was the apple of his family’s eye, but like many first time pet parents they underestimated the commitment required to raise him into the wonderful adult I know he can be. Now this smushy, affectionate, bouncy baby boy must find a new, more experienced family to love and cherish for the rest of his days. A genuine diamond in the rough and so worth a trip uptown to meet him, if you’re looking for a fun time, then Harlem is definitely the place to be!
08/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Harlem came to us an owner surrender on 8/3/2016. Owner reported that he lived with an eleven year old child, plays gently and exuberantly. Owner reported that Harlem allows you to take away his food bowl and toy. It is reported Harlem is housebroken and crate trained with both open and closed door. During intake, Harlem was hyperactive, allowed all handling. Harlem pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He displayed high energy and movement upon entering SAFER assessment room. Harlem allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body wiggly. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, open mouth, tail wag. Harlem was distracted and unresponsive to touch during Tag game, focused on other stimuli in the room. He moved his legs and body away on paw Squeeze attempt, so remaining item was conducted using Flank. Harlem had no response to both Flank Squeezes. He playfully and enthusiastically engaged with Toy, took it away with a soft body. The Behavior Team feels Harlem would do best with an Experienced adopter. He would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and body awareness. Harlem may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Harlem may do best walked by adults only, using a harness. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, body wiggly Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. His body is between you and the toy, body loose Dog-to-dog: Harlem engages in engages in bouncy, running play with a boistrous female. 08/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Harlem has displayed playful behaviors while interacting off leash with dogs. The behavior team feels that Harlem may be placed into a home with another social, playful dog with the recommendation for a pre adoption itneraction to ensure compatability. His previous owner cites “Harlem has never lived with another animal.” so it’s not exactly known how his behavior with dogs at the care center will translate into a home setting. 8/4: When off leash with other dogs, Harlem is submissive and low when greeting, then begins to engage in play with intent to mount once comfortable. 8/5 update: Harlem engages in bouncy play when solicited but may attempt to mount when play ceases. 8/6 update: Harlem engages in engages in bouncy, running play with a boistrous female. He will attempt to mount when play ceases but takes correction well.
