A volunteer writes:

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words but all I can come up with when looking at photos of Hans is ​hubba ​hubba hubba! ​I’ve never seen a more handsome ‘mane’ or engaging ​ smile and Hans’ personality is just as fabulous as his looks. He’s friendly and sociable, gentle and playful and has all the intelligence for which his breed is renowned. His emaciated frame speaks of deprivation but someone clearly cared enough to train him well and he heels wonderfully on leash, comes and sits on command and hops up to catch balls or treats like a pro. When it comes to handling, grooming or playing dress-up with a bandanna, Hans is totally chill and he’s been nothing but sweet with staff and volunteers alike. Unfortunately there’s one aspect of his education that Hans’ previous owner failed to address and it’s a Shepherd classic–guarding. As long as there’s plenty of balls to go around Hans is happy to share but once he claims one as ‘his ball’ he simply must keep it until you have another to throw in exchange or things are going to get grabby. Given his smarts and naturally friendly nature I’ve no doubt that he can learn better manners, all it takes is the right teacher. A good boy with a good heart, handsome (and neutered!) Hans has everything going for him and in loving, breed-experienced hands he’s going to shine like a star.
