09/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Handsome A1126139 KNOWN HISTORY: None 09/21/2017 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/24/2017 Summary: Due to the rapid escalation seen upon his medical examination, Handsome is not considered to be a safe dog on whom to perform a handling assessment. Out of concern for his stress level and safety of staff, an assessment will not be performed at this time. PLAYGROUP: Pending. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 09/21/2017 Handsome allowed all handling upon intake though when given water he froze and hard stared at the counselor when she walked by. Once she sat down at her desk, he continued to hard stare and remain frozen until he realized the counselor was ignoring him. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/21/2017 During his initial medical examination, Handsome initially appeared loose and wiggly though upon restraint escalated to lunging, growling and snarling towards the handler. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Handsome became highly uncomfortable when being restraint/approached for his initial medical examination; lunging, snarling and snapping and appeared unable to readily recover. Handsome attempted to grab onto handler’s shirt though was pulled away by a second handler. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the intensity of threatening behavior displayed in the care in addition to our lack of known history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the snapping and underlying anxiety. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Handsome has growled and snapped upon restraint, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Handsome to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Handsome escalates quickly to snapping and snarling, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Handsome needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Handsome as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
