A volunteer writes:  Han Solo?  More like Jabba the Hutt!  Ok, ok, that’s not very nice, Han is not THAT big, but he is a chunky monkey who will do just about anything for a snack, even dance! He’s pretty chill and may prefer relaxing over fighting with light sabers, but Han is a good guy, not a villain like Jabba, so I suppose his name fits him.  Han Solo is excellent on leash, seems housetrained and is super friendly.  Han Solo was brought to the center with his housemate by circumstances that were beyond his control.  Han Solo is not from another galaxy, he’s waiting right here in Brooklyn just begging to make your acquaintance.  So do or do not—there is no try—ask to meet him today!

BEHAVIOR :

KNOWN HISTORY: N/A

Intact Male, Stray

ASSESSMENT:

Look:1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.

Squeeze 1:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.

Squeeze 2:1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed.

Toy: Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away.

Summary: Han Solo was friendly and social towards the assessor and showed no concerns.

Group Behavior::

Han Solo was surrender with another resident dog, but due to the nature of the surrender the relationship between the two is unknown.

01/06/17: When off leash in the Care Center, Han Solo displays wide eyes and high vibrating tail near the gate. He initially is sexually motivated and attempts to mount. He listens to the handler’s interruptions, and engages in brief bouts of play when the social female solicits him.

01/07/17: When greeting a neutered male, he displays a high tail and a slightly stiff body. After the handler’s interrupt, he briefly shakes off and offers a few bounces with both the male and female dog in the pen. He becomes uncomfortable, giving low growls, when the male’s energy slightly increases.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:

During his medical examination, Han Solo was calm and allowed all handling.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (Suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
