09/12/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hailey has one look–HAPPY PUPPY! Fun, friendly, nibbly kisses, playtime and snuggle time all await the lucky adopter of Miss Hailey. She’s gorgeous, she’s smart, and sits before being asked when she sees a treat! Although she samples both my treats super gently, she discards them both when not to her liking. Sorry Hailey–your new parents will do better! Hailey even sat to wait for me to throw a ball, which she chases gleefully and brings back for another throw. She loves to cuddle as much as she loves to play, seems to be housetrained, and greets everyone with a kiss and a wave of her tail. Her original intake notes state that she’s playful, and jumped up, seeking attention. Yup, that’s Hailey, but it’s all in appropriate puppy play and love. Hailey comes when called, poses for photos as if she’s auditioning as a cover model for Doggie Vogue, rocks her tee shirt and is simply a sparkly, lively, loving little girl. In her first playgroup, she greeted males and females polity and enjoyed some bouncy play. Hailey is hoping to meet her new family quickly for a lifetime of love, structure and play.
09/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/8/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/10/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor consistently and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog jumps on Assessor, mouths with moderate pressure, grabs the leash. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog mouths the Assessor’s hand. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Hailey displayed a high level of activity and movement on the assessment, jumping up and mouthing the assessor repeatedly. PLAYGROUP: Hayley has been interested in play with other dogs, though has also begun display increasing level of anxiety during her stay in the care center. The behavior department recommends allowing Hailey a period of decompression in a new environment. Introductions to other dogs should be conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Hailey was friendly. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/8/17 During her initial medical exam, Hailey was playful and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hailey so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to the level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Hailey becomes quickly over stimulated around excitement, jumping up and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force free training should be used to teach her to remain calm in the presence of excitement. When she beings jumping or mouthing, people should walk away from her. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Hailey was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Hailey puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. _X_Leash-biting
