11/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: He’s watched the debates, weighed the issues, is wearing his stars and stripes scarf and is ready to vote. Elect to adopt…Gummy! This awesomely gorgeous guy in his slate gray gleaming coat sits quietly looking up at me as I leash him, and out we go. Likely housetrained, he potties immediately, and we’re off to the park. He poses for some pictures during a brief stop, not minding being tethered, but it’s back in the pen that we have the best time. Tossing a toy around, greeting other dogs with a stupendous wiggle butt, showing off a sit with some coaxing and enjoying some treats, Gummy is so sweetly tail waggy through it all. Each time a dog or a person passed our pen, Gummy ran over to wag his tail and campaign for another vote. A vote for Gummy is a vote for a fabulous companion forever and ever. No term limits here! Gummy is holding another rally and is hoping you’ll attend today. And he’s a candidate who will keep his promises!

Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions, anxious, barks, leash biting, difficult to position. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on the Assessor and all other stimuli available. His body is soft, barking anxiously, distracted and focused on other stimuli Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, becomes playful and soft pops body towards end of game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy 1: 1. Dog plays, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Gummy appeared anxious throughout the assessment. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Gunny to new and unfamiliar situations. PLAYGROUP: Gummy engages in running play with male and female dogs. He attempts to mount when play slows down, but it should be taken into consideration that Gummy is unaltered at this time. The behavior department feels that Gummy should have slow introductions to other social resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/30/2016 During his initial medical examination, Gummy readily allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
