KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/07/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT 07/11/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Guero was social and allowed all handling for his assessment though appeared to startle easily, at times flinched and shied away from handler though readily recovered. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Guero solicits and engages in gentle play in a group of male and female dogs. Guero was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Guero be placed with dogs that match his gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 07/07/17 Upon intake, Guero was active and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/10/17 During his initial medical examination, Guero tolerated handling though became uncomfortable when back end was examined (growled). ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Guero so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Guero has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching behind him (growls). It is important to always go slow and give Guero the option to walk away from any social interaction. Guero should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Guero’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Guero may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
