08/14/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/14/17 16:58 Basic Info: Gucci A1121999 is a young male white & brown breed mix who was given to the owner as a gift at 3mnths old and is being surrendered due to him being too big/strong and him biting someone in the home. He was last seen by a veterinarian as a puppy and currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Gucci is friendly/outgoing. He’s lived with a 1, 7 & 19yr olds and was gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful with them, the adults in the home and an older male small breed dog that would visit occasionally. Gucci has bitten a person but the bite caught the person’s pants and barely the skin. Behavior: Gucci isn’t bothered by the following being moved off of furniture, being brushed or being disturbed while sleeping/resting. For bath time Gucci will attempt to jump out the tub. He hasn’t had his nails trimmed or had his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved. If someone approaches the home/family member Gucci will bark and want attention. For A New Family to Know: Gucci is friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable & independent with a medium activity level. The owner likes how protective of them he is. Gucci enjoys sleeping, squeaky toys and games of fetch, chase, wrestling & tug. Gucci is mostly an indoor only dog who with the owner & is walked 2-3x a day where he pulls lightly on his leash and lunges at other dogs. Gucci eats dry Pedigree 2x a day and given Milk Bone dog treats sometimes. He will have accidents in the home if someone takes too long to take him out. When left home alone Gucci is well behaved but does bark. Intake Behavior: Gucci allowed minimal handling, he was barking and lip raising/showing teeth (kind of like an awkward smile) and wanted to get/keep away from the admissions counselor. The owner assisted with scanning (-), collaring, taking his pictures & placing him into the kennel to which he lunged & hard barked at another dog in an adjoining kennel.

Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Gucci is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and independent with a medium activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/15/17 Summary: Gucci is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging against the bars and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Gucci is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Gucci was barking and showing teeth. He lunged and barked at another dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/15/17 During his initial medical exam, Gucci did not allow handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Gucci’s previous owner described him as having a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Gucci’s bite history, as well as his behavior at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, as well as Gucci’s bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the biting and underlying anxiety. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Gucci has attempted to bite during his stay in our care centers when uncomfortable. He has also bitten in his previous home. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Gucci to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_Bite history/risk of future aggression: Gucci has bitten in his previous home when his owner was arguing with her son. He escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Gucci needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Gucci as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center and in the home Gucci has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them barking, and growling. Gucci may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
