A volunteer writes: The first time I met Gucci she needed a little coaxing to come out of her cage. But the real challenge was not getting her out, but forcing myself to put her back — she is as sweet as they come! When she first arrived she would only walk if her housemate was at her side. She is out of her element and can be timid, but she is incredibly affectionate. She walks nicely on leash and seems housebroken. She doesn’t know commands, but if I kneel down next to her when she’s sitting she’s quick to put her paw in my hand — as if she just wants contact. She’ll sniff my face and then gently lick it. Next she’ll press her side into me and then topple over, belly to the sky! It may start as an act of submission, but turns into a belly rub she doesn’t want to end. When I encourage her to get up she’ll stretch her front paws and bat them at me and lick my hands when I pet her. She makes very soft lingering eye contact and will gently prop her paws on familiar staff members we meet in the hall. She is a sensitive gal that’s impossible not to fall for. She can still be a little bashful in her cage, but does a little tap dance when I approach. Capturing her in a photo proved to be challenging as just the sight of the camera sent her running and hiding in places she couldn’t fit. Please come see how beautiful Gucci is, inside and out, in person!

FEBRUARY 2016
Basic Information:
Gucci is a black and white spayed American Pitbull terrier. She was surrendered by her owner due to behaviors she was displaying in the home. She was adopted from ACC and was with her owner for two months. She is described as friendly, pushy, and mellow.
Socialization:
Gucci has lived with five adults and one teenager. Around strangers she is described as friendly and outgoing. Owner stated when visitors come to the home he will jump and engage in exuberant play. Around children she was playful and owner stated she would jump and play somewhat rough with the teenager. She has not been around other dogs or cats.
Behavior:
Gucci often urinates and defecates in the home; owner stated he would walk her twice a day and she would not use the bathrrom outside and come inside and use the bathroom. They tried using pee pads in the home and stated she would not use them. Owner stated she will eat her feces. Owner stated when left alone Gucci will destroy household items, owner stated she would chew at the walls and any items left around the home, she chewed through a cell phone. When eating she is not bothered when her food is touched or when a treat is taken away. When pushed off furniture she will push back and will not budge. She is not bothered when she is bathed or when she is brushed. Owner stated when a stranger approaches her home Gucci is not bothered and will lay down, once the visitor is in the home she will greet them and jump on them engaging in exuberant play.
For a new family to know:
Gucci’s activity level is described as medium owner stated she likes to lounge around the home and has her moment where she wants to jump and run around the home. She likes to play with squeaky, stuffed, ropes and kong toys. She likes to play tug and has been kept only indoors. Owner tried to crate train Gucci and stated when they returned she would have feces all over the cage and herself. She is used to slow leashed walks and will pull very hard while on leash. She knows the commands sit and lay down and she sleeps in her dog bed.
Upon intake Gucci was calm and allowed all handling. Counselor was able to collar, photograph and scan (positive).
Behavior: Experienced Home
Gucci previously lived with five adults and one teenager. The owner stated Gucci is playful and somewhat rough around the teenager. The owner mentioned when Gucci is left alone she will destroy household items, as the walls and other items left around the house. It was reported by the owner Gucci had a medium activity level and also urinates and defecates in the home because she is not house broken.
At intake it was reported Gucci was calm and allowed all handling. During SAFER Gucci came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly, social and very playful towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Gucci joins the game and mouths the leash in a playful manner during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Gucci was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Gucci is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as walls and other objects around the house. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Gucci will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so Gucci can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Gucci engages in high energy play with body slams and running/chase play.
