Gucci

Hello, my name is Gucci. My animal id is #19151. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 25-Jan-2018.

Gucci is at risk for behavior reasons. She is very fearful in the care center, and distrustful of unknown persons and stimulii. For this reason, we are seeking placement only with a New Hope partner. Medically, we have no concerns for Gucci, who presents as a healthy dog.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A volunteer writes: Gucci is an adorable silver nugget, tiny, shiny and all silky to the touch. He usually sits or lays in the middle of his bed (that is always spotless) and in a very orderly den. Gucci seems to be quite house trained, and few walks a day by his fans make sure that his basic needs are met. Gucci and I met a few times, and I am glad to say that he is definitely more sociable now than he was upon arrival. He is fine being dressed, outfitted with a scarf and yesterday, even let me pick him up for lap time and caresses. He really is the cutest in his wiry hair. I love his beady eyes and his scruffy face. Gucci would love the comfort of a home and the love of a human. Do not make him wait too long. He so wants to be your friend.

My medical notes are…

Weight: 11.8 lbs

Details on my behavior are…

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

  • Behavior History
  • Behavior Assessment

Gucci had an anxious body upon intake. She was barking at the admissions counselor and charging at him. She allowed her finder to collar her.

Date of Intake: 1/25/2018

Basic Information:: Gucci is a female small mixed breed dog. She was found and brought in as stray.

Date of intake:: 1/25/2018

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 1/28/2018

Look:: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity:: 5. Dog freezes, growls, or tries to bite.

Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.

Summary:: Gucci appeared fearful in the assessment room, having a trembling body and tucked tail. She avoided the assessor but eventually allowed the assessor to approach. When sensitivity was attempted, she panicked, attempting to flee, and snapped, so the rest of the handling portion of the assessment was not conducted.

Summary (1):: 1/26: When introduced off leash to other dogs, Gucci corrects forward approach but will sniff other dogs when they are otherwise occupied.

Summary (2):: 1/29-30: Gucci keeps mostly to self.

Date of intake:: 1/25/2018

Summary:: Gucci appeared anxious and was barking and charging at the admission’s counselor.

Date of initial:: 1/26/2018

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Gucci so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Gucci is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Gucci has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Gucci is very fearful at the care center and has snapped and growled when handled. It is important to always go slow and give Gucci the option to walk away from any social interaction. Gucci should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Gucci’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Gucci would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
