03/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A staff memeber writes: Otto is such a charmer with his endearing blue eyes! When he stares at you, you can just tell there is a deep soul behind his pretty eyes. He backs up those eyes with the moves to match! He loves attention, rubbing against your body and demanding more love by putting his paws on your lap. He enjoys being pet all over and playing with tennis balls. Chasing his own tail seems to be a hobby of his, and he catches it every time! This love bug is just waiting for the right person to become his fur-ever friend.
03/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
In a home environment briefly, Otto (fka Guarano) showed fearful behavior toward strangers and several of his new family members (all male). He growled, nipped, and scratched on several occasions, and while on a walk lunged at a neighbor (13 years old) and left four punctures on his hip. We have limited information about the context of these bites or about the triggers. All were bite-and-retreat. Otto was corrected for growling and responded poorly to the correction. We advise that dogs should never be disciplined for warning behaviors, and that Otto will likely need a considerable acclimation period to his new home. Other notes from his time in this home environment: with a Chihuahua and a Basenji he was relaxed and respectful, and he chased the cats but did not injure them. He is described as independent, fearful, anxious, confident but can be friendly, affectionate and playful, with a moderate energy level. 3/3 SAFER: Guarano came to us as a stray, so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter. Guarano was a bit nervous when entering the behavior room, but was interested in interacting with the assessor. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items, though had very stiff body language during some of these items. He showed no interest in the toy and approached the helper dog with confident body language, but displayed no aggression. The behavior department believes that Guarano would be best placed with and experienced owner with no children. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 3. Dog stands tall and square. His tail perpendicular to spine, mouth closed for the majority of assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Flank squeeze 2: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward. Helper: 0980717
