Basic Information:: Grove is a black large dog that is possibly 2 years old. The owner received Grover as a gift from a friend. Grover has been cared for 2 months. However the owners are surrendering Grove due landlord issues.

How is this dog around strangers?: When strangers come over Grover wags his tail and jumps up for kisses. He licks them affectionately and solicit attention.

How is this dog around children?: He has lived with small children ages 1 and 9 months old. The children visit the home and Grove wags his tail and enjoys being petted. He is gentle & affectionate.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Grove around other dogs (male or female dogs) he growls, pulls on the lease and appears to be reactive. The owner stated that on walks he growls, and lunges at small or large dogs.

How is this dog around cats?: Grove in his previous home has lived with two cats. He was relaxed and not bothered by them.

Resource guarding:: Grove has never shown resource guarding. He allows his food bowl touched while eating, removing toys from his mouth, removing bones from his mouth. He allows to be bathed but has never had his nails trimmed.

Bite history:: Never had a bite history.

Other Notes:: Grove is participial house trained. He uses the bathroom outside and gets walks 3-2 times a day. He spends 7 hours at home alone when owners are away. He sometimes chew on the pillows and urinates.

Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, ears are back, tail is down, relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag:: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, or repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff.

Summary:: Tag:3. Dog becomes easily aroused, mouths the leash but quickly de-escalates when distracted with other items. Grove came into the room with a high energy level, he was also anxious but friendly towards the handlers.

Summary (1):: Grove is uncomfortable in a group session. He attempts to solicit play, but offers a series of corrections when the other dog reciprocates his solicitations. He spends the rest of the session exploring the pens with a tense body. According to Grove’s previous owner, Grove growls and snaps at other dogs on the leash and appears to be reactive. Due to his past behavior with other dogs, as well as his current behavior in Group, the Behavior Department recommends that Grove be the only resident dog at the time. 10/27: When off leash at the Care Center, Grove ignores the greeter, and explores the pens and its smells. He eventually greets her, with a soft but tall posture. He is sexually motivated and engages in cooperative play; while displaying raised hackles. He grumbles at the novel female dog when she paw slaps him and immediately moves away after shaking off (stress reliever) 10/28: Grove anxiously enters the pen. He briefly engages in running chase play, before correcting the novel female for body contact. He spends the rest of the session attempting to exit the pens. 11/04: In a group of calm male and female dogs, Grove is soft and social as he wanders the pens keeping to himself. He greets the male dog with a soft body, but begins to frantically sniff and follow him. He listens to the handlers corrections and goes off to explore the pens and seek handler’s attention.

Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to potential food guarding behavior. Grover gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (becomes stiff) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Grove can be left alone while eating so he does not need to escalate to a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Mia has shown during playgroup, we feel that Mia should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Mia associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the care center as Grove was observed to become stiff when engaged with item and at time. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Grove’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.
